i am running whs at home. for some reason my one pc can not connect to whs. This is my pc where internet is shared from. i think its a dns issue. because when i ping whs1, it goes outside. when ever i ping whs1 from any other computer it goes to a local box.

ive tried to setup a lmhosts file on the problem pc

169.254.242.188 whs1

1) is that right?
2) or am i looking into this issue the wrong way?

i can ping my whs1 box on this problem pc by ip address.

well, it seems to be working now. stepped away for 2 hrs and it was able to connect.

couple things here...

#1 - LMHOSTS file is for static resolution of NetBIOS names to IP address. So, modifying the LMHOSTS on the problem-computer won't do any good. LMHOSTS does pretty much the same thing as the HOSTS file, except it's FQDN vs NetBIOS resolutions.

#2 - you don't want to use an APIPA IP address. Where'd you get that 169 address from? FWIW, a 169.x.y.z address means the computer did not receive a DHCP reply for an IP lease. So usually, if you get a 169, it means the computer wasn't able to get an IP.

#3 - "this is my pc where internet is shared from." care to elaborate on that a bit? You have ICS enabled on this PC? It's being used as the gateway? How many PCs total?

yes, this pc does internet sharing. and that is the address it got from dchp i guess. i am rebuilding this soon so ill give it a 10. subnet.

ok, that would explain the 169 then ;)
any reason you don't just get a router? would certainly simplify things, since Windows ICS is... not the best choice.

for the longest i only had the server and one other pc, so i used a extra nic i had around the house. and back then didnt want to spend 200$ for a router.

now i have 8 port switch and have maybe 2 ports free. it does the job.
