Question about LCD "ghosting"

I just saw this widescreen LCD monitor in a PC Club newspaper ad, and noticed it had an 8ms response time, and said "no more ghosting":
http://www.amazon.com/Hanns·G-HW-191D-Widescreen-TFT-Monitor/dp/B000F9GZN2(here at amazon)

I've always stayed away from LCD's, not only because of ghosting, but because they can have quite low framerates and be a bit blurry when it comes to gaming.

Are those days over? Will a monitor like this (or some other model out there) look and perform *just* like a CRT, with the best gaming performance?

I'm waiting for the days when LCD's are finally up to par with CRT, so I can get one.

My brother has the LCD for his Mac and we played Call of Duty 2 and there isnt any ghosting at all. We also hooked it up to my PC and tested CSS and it plays with out any ghosting.

edit: heres a screen (sorry its not that great)

Thanks for posting the pic. Looks nice.

What about framerate? Is it smooth like a CRT?

well a LCD cant give you low FPS unless your hardware is old.

I use a DELL 1907FP 8ms for my PC and its a great LCD but not widescreen. I play CZ,BF2,CoD2,BF2142,FEAR combat and sometimes CSS.

Ghosting on an LCD is a thing of the past. Most newer LCDs are very good in games. I have a Dell 2007WFP and its perfect, no ghosting, no framerate drops, its a lot clearer then my old Phillips 19" CRT. The 2007WFP has an 8ms response time I believe.

If youre in the market for a new LCD monitor, just be sure to do research to make sure you are buying a quality product. There are very nice LCDs on eth market and very poor ones.

Fix. ;)

My next monitor will probably be bought in two's (at least 19" each), for a dual-screen setup, so I probably wouldn't go higher than around $200 each, or it would get extremely pricey.

So, around $200 for one, or $400 for two, if I can manage.

lol thanks. I dont see how a monitor could cause a framerate drop unless its just having troubles keeping up. If thats the case, then you must have one of the first LCDs ever released :p

I just (as in the last couple weeks) switched from a CRT to an LCD and ghosting really isn't a problem at all. Modern LCDs are quite fast. You can, under certain circumstances, get it to ghost a bit but it doesn't happen in general use and when it does, it's not that noticeable. For example I was messing with a synthetic test going from black to dark blue and I got a little ghosting going on. However in games I really don't see it.

Also please remember that it's not like CRTs display a perfectly blur-free image. There is a decay time on the phosphors which leads to a trail.

Something else to note is that what some people think is a defect is just normal persistence of vision. Our eyes/brain blurs things together. Just how it works. Wave your hand in front of your face, it'll blur. There's no actual blur of course, your perception is just that way.

Either way, LCDs get my seal of approval for gaming. I've been a long time CRT guy and I'm not sorry I dropped the money on this LCD. For games it's roughly a wash with the CRT, in that it's better in some ways, worse in some but only minor things. For desktop work, the LCD is miles ahead.

So what's worse you ask? The main thing would be low level colour. LCDs do bright well, they don't do dark well. This means you have to turn the brightness up. On my CRT, I'd calibrate it around 80cd/m^2. Much brighter than that and I started to get some bleed. My LCD won't even go below like 120cd/m^2 and at that level the low level colours aren't very good. In my case, I'm happy, I can now leave my room lights on rather than needing to work in the dark, but it is something to be aware of, at least with some LCDs.

I was worried that I wouldn't like an LCD since I valued the good colour of my CRT and games are my main thing but all the worry was for naught. I love this thing.

My advice would be to spend plenty to make sure you get a good one. If you get a $150 job, ya it may end up sucking. Spend the cash for a good LCD and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Also you may want to consider 20" LCDs rather than 19". Why? Well all the 19s I've seen are 1280x1024. When you run the numbers, that's a ratio of 5:4 which is non-standard (though I guess it's more standard these days since so many LCDs like it). Normal CRTs are 4:3. However the 20" LCDs are 1600x1200 which is 4:3. Is it a problem? Well it depends. Some games aren't aware of different aspect ratios and you'll get a slightly squashed display on a 5:4 screen.

However 19s certainly are what's popular and you are likely to get the most bang for your buck, as well as the most choices at that size.
