Question about lapping

It sounds to me like they're telling you to take the edges of your heatsink and carve or score a small area that doesn't meet at a 90 degree angle. I have never done this while lapping. However I can see how it would likely make the process easier.

Basically, around the CPU side of the heatsink, just put a tiny bevelled edge.

My question about lapping has always been what to do with the hole in the heat spreader on a P4.

OMG, this is a SLOW process.
2.5 hours and I've still got a ways to go.
 
i naturaly bevel the edges when lapping just the motion tilts it ever so slightly, if you look carefuly you can see it

well I started with 400, but then I went down to 180, seemed to be working good, so I worked my way up to 400 again
but I was getting nowhere, so now I'm down to 180 again
I've still got about a quarter size circle of silver in the middle
I am planning to use 180 until it's gone
 
its THAT smooth, the funny part is i did that just for fun. i lapped my xp-120 after i got water cooling... you want somthing uber lapped, leave it on one of my tables, it will get lapped after a week or two lol
i actualy lapped two xp-120s, i lapped mine, my friend took that one and gave me his messed up base xp-120 and i lapped it to how you see it now

i use 100 grit to get rid of the plating, its THICK
 
how long did it take you?

edit: lowest I have is 180, what's the highest grit you used?
 
hmmm....maybe I will have to lap my SI-97 before I sell it. I assume the lapping helps heat conduction since more contact is made with the CPU. Neat stuff, I will have to try it. :)

2000 grit that has been worn down to the point that it could probably be called 3000, then i put a paper towel over the sand paper and use that to buff it (i use a sanding block)
REMEMBER TO USE WATER or its going to be a major PITA

how long did it take?
 
i honestly dont know, less then 3 hours i suppose but after doing sanding to my case paint up to 2000 grit it felt real fast
 
whats kind of ironic is after sanding almost all the parts to 2000 grit i re-decided on having mirror finish and didnt use the rubbing compound, so it looks like brushed aluminum now :p

thats my mirror finish trial from like a foot away from the laptop; that was just rubbing it with my fingers, wonder how it would look with rubbing compound

You definitely have a lot of spare time :D

I usually stop lapping after 30-60 minutes because it's such boring work. Perhaps I should try the 'multiple sessions'-strategy ^_^
 
it certainly doesnt take me 8 hours, maybe 4 hours max but i do the first stage literaly under running water with 100 grit then move up from there
 
I lapped my heatspreader too, and it gave me great results. I had such poor contact between my one newcastle and the xp-120, the temps dropped over 20c. As I have said before, I think I got a bumb batch of xp-120's, because I also have a few xp-90c's and they were no where near as concave as the xp-120. My load temps in prime went from 60-61c to 35c. I reseated that thing so many times thinking that it was just mounted wrong, than after lapping both the HS and heatspreader my temps dropped way down. I also bent the retention clips on the XP-120 to give it a little more pressure.
