Question about integrated coolbits overclocking...

Just curious, if coolbits integrated into the nvidia drivers says that it didn't pass the test at whichever clock speed you have set, does that really mean the card won't be stable and run fine at that setting? If not, is there any way to force it to run there? Thanks guys.
 
the only way to tell for sure is to run tests of your own and see what happens. I mean it may work fine for 2 months then one day start screwing up and you may be SOL at that point. The best thing to do is just use the automatic detection and do it about 6 times or so and get the average clock speeds it gives you.
 
Well, I can't run any tests above where it stops me because I can't force it to run at the speed it says it failed at.
 
Someone mentioned to me before that Coolbits is influenced by the temperature. Sure enough, when it's cold, it will give me up to 455/1.18 on my 6800Ultra. I tried it after a long gaming session when the temps were right up and it suggested 428/1100. A mighty 3Mhz of core boost!

From memory I believe that you can influence how it'll pass the test by lowering the temps as well, but obviously it thinks something's up if it's rejecting your suggested overclock.

EDIT - I think the tests he's talking about are the 'autodetect optimal frequency' ones which you can get to when you change the overclocking tab from 2D to 3D. It's usually an ok guide (again based on temperature), but don't take it as Gospel, since my card locks up sometimes at the suggested core, but goes much higher on the memory.
 
Hmmm...I was wondering if it might factor in temp. It's kind of hot in my apartment right now because my landlord can't set the thermostat right. heh. Anyway, is there another app I can use to force the oc and test it in games? Otherwise, I guess I can wait until it's cooler or I get that NV5 I've been looking at.
 
Oh, and just so you know, the core fails at 418mhz and the mem at 1.07ghz. I was hoping to get the mem to at least 1.1 and the core to ~425.
 
I think Rivatuner can force it. Unfortunately I'm on a fresh build so haven't reinstalled it yet in order for me to test and give you a definite answer.

EDIT - and from what I've read, you're best off getting that NV5 on there asap if you're serious about holding a high overclock with reasonable temperatures.
 
Yes its temp , mine detects 455/1300 now after AS5 and copper but after a full load at stock settings it detects 439/1200 That would be more acurate in real world usage
