Question about Hyper-V vs. VMware

So I did a quick search and didn't really find anything that helps me. My question is this, which of these would be best to VM a Ghost Image of a current server I have? The server is old and it's walking down the road to explosion. I would like to get a ghost image of it before I lose the hardware entirely. I have another server (sitting on top of it actually) that is running Windows Server 2008 R2, and I was going to virtualize the old server onto the new one. Is what I'm asking for even possible?

Edit: I'm new to virtualization, so please try to give me the most simple possible solution, but I'm not a complete moron I can figure some stuff out.

since your new server is already running 2008 r2. I would recommend Hyper-V
 
Ok so I was very excited about that program until I noticed that it doesn't work with windows 2000 server. And that is the OS that my old server is running. Now I am attempting to find a program that will work with Win2k Server.
 
Ok so I think I found a solution. Microsoft Virtual Machine Management seems to be the key to my problem. Thankfully I have a technet account and I believe there is a copy on there so I am going to try that since buying the program costs $850. I'll report back with my findings.
 
You dont even need Disk2VHD, just connect the drives to the Hyper-V host and when you create the new VMs VHD there is an option to image from a physical disk.

The only problem is they are on an old Adaptect SATA raid card (1210SA), and Server 2008 R2 doesn't have drivers for it. And it's the only raid card I have laying around atm.
 
Well are the drives in RAID1 or a JBOD? I am assuming/hoping they are not in a RAID0.

If its a JBOD you can just hook them up to something else.
If its RAID1 just power down the system, pull one of the drives, connect it to the new machine, make your VHD, and put it back in the old one.
 
It's a RAID 1 array, and I found another card laying around in another computer, now I am just trying to get the primary partition on the drives to actually work so I can copy all of the files off and then I'll just rebuild the array and make a virtual machine.
