Question about HD 4850 Temps

I hope this hasn't been dealt with elsewhere, but if it has, please refer me to the proper thread.

I just picked up an HD 4850, I messed with the profiles.xml to change the temps, no problems, I set it to 65% target. Checked it with GPU-Z on my second monitor while running Crysis. I forget what the temps are at load, but they're reasonable.

On default (29%), my temps were reaching 90c+ at load, which seems ridiculous to me. But, can someone explain to me why ATI would leave it that way? I mean, does 90c+ ruin the video card over time? I was reaching 80c idle before.

They're designed to run up to around 100c from what I've read. 80-90c isn't that bad for a video card but it's hot for sure.
