I have an older Asus P5NSLI system that I am turning into a file server for streaming media files and what not.

I am trying to find a low budget hardware based raid controller card, either PCIe or PCI, that can have 4 SATA drives plugged into it for raid 0+1. Well to be honest I am looking for a PCI one AND a PCIe one.

Any suggestions?

Quite honestly, if you are just using this for a home server streaming larger, sequential files you would be much better off buying a new motherboard/i3 processor and using the onboard Intel R0+1 than putting money into a (slow) PCI RAID controller. You will get much more bang for the buck, as well as gain improved transcoding power of the new processors.

For RAID 0+1 a PCI/PCIe controller will be fine.

Really the main reason for a fancy hardware raid card is when you use RAID the does parity. For Simple 0+1 software based cards are just fine, infact even using software RAID for this stuff is just fine.

The only problem with standard PCI slots is that the bus runs at 33MHz/32-bit and will cap the total bandwidth at 133MB/s.

The RAID will work fine, but there aren't many hardware RAID controllers with PCI, and those that still do exist, are not worth the money you will pay for them.

As the others have said, you will be better off buying a new motherboard and processor, using the onboard FakeRAID controller, and then buying a PCI-E hardware or Fake RAID controller.


Also, imo hardware RAID is hardly necessary for RAID 10 or 0+1 as even the cheapest FakeRAID controllers paired with older processors can handle it with ease.

Hardware RAID is more meant for RAID 5/6/50/60/etc where parity, performance, and minimal rebuild times are key factors.

There is no such thing as a software RAID card, I believe what you mean is FakeRAID.
Software RAID is managed through and app or daemon within the OS, it is not based on any hardware configuration or equipment, just fyi.

Here is a mix of hardware and Fake RAID controllers.

Just remember, you get what you pay for, so don't expect much for any RAID controller card in the sub-$30USD range.
 
Thank you all again for the advice. I've used Promise in the past so I will probably use them again since you guys recommend sticking with a non-hardware raid card for my setup.
