Honestly Tell me if I am dumb here...

Ever since I can remmebr when I used computers I restart alot alot... maybe 10 or 12 times a day... is this too much?

The reason I do this is because of ram... After I get done playing an intense video game, or something windows seems to be sluggish and shit for the first 30 seconds or so afterwards like all the ram has been used or whatever so i need to free it.. so I restart and the problem is fixed...

This has happened ever since i used computers back in the day unitl present.... Ihave never even left my computer on for like a whole day...

am I dumB? what sould I do differently? thanks...
 
...no, you're not dumb at all. When you noticed your machine slowing down, etc. after gaming or whatever, you reboot to restore proper operation. We all do.....except my system goes weeks without needing a reboot.

The question should be - why do you have to? Sounds like it's time for some stability testing and a full re-install of the operating system.

Good advice from the bbs.

I could add i had that problem all the time with win98 se, winxp usually runs fine for days before needing a reboot. Might want to make sure you have all the updates for windows.

i can keep it on for about a day or 2 (laptop), whereas we NEVER turn of the deskop... maybe a restart a week @ max... its running me hebrew edition (lol)
 
I did the same thing as you USMC2Hard4U-until WindowsXP.
With XP I don't have to restart hardly at all. Even after heavy gaming, defragging, Ad-aware and Spy-Bot whatever. It just doesn't need to be "refreshed" like W/98 or 95 did.
And you could really tell that you needed to restart to free up memory again in W/98/95. The machine ran crisper upon restart.
Maybe it's me but I don't restart my boxes hardly ever since I put XP in them.
I do shut them down at night, well one of them now that ones folding, can't get out of that habit.
I'll bet you're on XP anyway so try not restarting. XP seems to re assign the memory or something after a bit compared to older os.

Mabe I'm imagining this:confused:
 
Usually i only reboot once every 2-3 days.. Sometimes longer. With XP... It really doesn't need to be rebooted all the time.. With ME and 98.. It needed it a lot.

....very good point. The W9X OS's aren't nearly as well behaved as the NT / XP generation. If you have the hardware, you should be on XP. If you don't.....get it.....:D

i watch sometimes television on my computer. last night i left it on until now and i have no reboots but temperature was 81 inside now it's 96...?

Is the Ambient Temperature in your Room higher now then it was lastnight?

Is that Celsius? That's pretty high for a comp that's in idle.

Anyways, I've computed since the Win 3.1 days, and was always griping about all the "Memory Low" or "Resources low" messages I'd keep getting. Always had to restart to refresh the RAM.

With Win 2K/XP though, I run this comp for weeks on end without a restart. Sometimes I'll probably lose some memory due to a memory leak in a program or something, but if you feel your system slowing down, just restart.
 
I restart a few times each day, but it's just a habit. Also, I always reboot after installing or changing anything, just because it seems like a good idea.

Talk about a thread hijack...:rolleyes:

To get better paging performance, defrag and then set the swap file to an exact amount. There are also a lot of other tweaks you can do to get better RAM performance, expecially in 9x. You really shouldn't have to reboot 10+ times a day.

yes. right now it's still display on my harddrive cooler: 96F. it kind of level there...

USMC what os are you using?? (you said gameing so i know its windows) 95,98, me, and xp home all suck like scotts mom when you give her a 20, running 2kpro, i dont have to deal with any of these issues, so you may just want to upgrade your os, i like 2k pro, but xp will work too (I just dont like it)


what happens if you dont restart, you said its sluggish for 30 seconds, does that stop after 30 seconds, and then your all good, or does something elce happen, some games need some time to shutdown, save, and reset your moniter settings

(I restart my pc for software upgrades and "you must restart your pc for this to take effect" things, thats about it, ive had both my tower and my file server on for a month at a time (gaming and all)

I've got 512 MB of RAM and a dedicated swap file partition of 440 MB. Works well. There are many more RAM tweaks listed at tweak3d.net. You both should check them out if you feel the need for more speed.
