Question about Farcry

I have an Athlon 2000XP running at stock speed and cooling, 512Mb SDRAM (not DDR). Everything else in the system are normal. Would I be able to play Farcry at good image quality and 1280x1024 resolution with a 9800SE card?

If the above answer is "NO" or "absolutely no card will" then wIth a better chip and mobo (Ahtlon 64 3000+ OR Pentium 4 3.0Ghz <--- these are almost the same price) and 1Gb of DDR RAM, will the 9800SE yield good result with Farcry? I don't need to run the game at 1600x1200 resolution with all AA and AF on, just as long as it looks great with no artifacts :D I am restricted to 1280x1024 resolution on my LCD anyway.

Thanks for any comment.

Not really, for 1280x1024 with all effects on and 4xAA/8xAF you need something like a 6800gt ($399) / 6800U ($499) or x800xt ($499) and a fast cpu. If you don't mind using 4xAA/4xAF you could probably get by with a 6800 standard ($299) at that resolution with effects still at high.

If you dont mind turning effects to low or medium with little to no aa/af it might work ok with the 9800se.

it will work but i would consider getting the rig you suggested (ath64 3000+ etc.). and maybe look into a 6800non ultra

Heres a comparison for you. Check my rig (sig). Compare it to yours. I can run farcry at 1024x768 with medium/low detail and no AA/AF with only a tiny bit of choppiness.

So the answer to the first question is no. The answer to the second question is also no. The 9800SE just isn't powerful enough.

another comparison, i run Far Cry with the system in my sig (with the 9600 pro, not gt) at 1280x1024 at medium and high detail settings with no choppiness. frames stay above 30fps. with that 512 *SDRAM* and 2000+ you are going to hit a major bottleneck, 1. the textures at high detail are too big for 512 and it will page to your hdd, i learned that the hard way, and 2. that processor is too weak to keep up with the video card in Far Cry

Maybe 800X600 without any problems. But the SE is not really a good videocard. the 9800 pro would be a better bet. If you have the money, I would get the GT, or NU. But then your system is going to be the bottleneck for any good videocard you choose.

Thanks for the info, they are really helpful.

As to buying the vid card. Does the board maker really matter? I tend to buy brands that I am familiar with (Asus, Shappire, Leadtek....). I never heard of eVGA or Powercolor. But does it matter? As long as it's 6800NU/GT... and has 256-bit memory it is OK, correct? :D

Pity me with my Radeon 7200 :) Games I play are Counter Strike / Rise of Nation / Starcraft / Need for speed underground... and the card are fine for those :D Now playing Farcry... I know that upgrade is a must lol..

eVGA and BFG seem to be the big 2 for nvidia at the moment. Both have great service, BFG has a better warranty, eVGA comes with Far Cry.
