question about eyefinity...

Hi guys, just got a question.

Since R9 290x only got two DVI-D, HDMI and mini-displayport as output I was wondering, I've been interested on getting into triple monitor set-up but I don't have space for two other 23" monitors coz that would be way too wide in the space I need to work it with.

So I thought maybe if I get two 16" widescreen monitors, I can set them up as portrait on left and right side of my existing 23" monitor to make it a wider view without being too wide. Thing about 16" monitors they usually only come with VGA adapters.

Now my concern is can I use a simple VGA to DVI-D adapters on those two 16" monitors and the main display as Mini-Displayport to DVI-D adapter (I believe active display adapter is needed?) for eyefinity set-up?

I just don't wanna buy the monitors and end up not being able to use eyefinity with them.

yeah, no xfire, windowed mode, and a hack

sounds like a nice winter project getting that all working

I think it is?

Not sure tho, I've been researching if there's solution to it.

I read this in the comments
...it does say in the description that it is in windowed mode, so there would be no need for Eyefinity if running in windowed mode. To get the curveing effect that eyefinity has on edge monitors he has just increased the fov to distort the image and make it so that in his peripheral view it doesn't look distorted because of the angle of the monitors...

this guy seem to use it, i dunno what that SoftTH is..

its software that will let you do PLP without eyefinity.

I was just asking nicely you don't have to be an asshole. thanks!

listen, I'm not trying to be an asshole

It is often hard enough getting eyefinity to work right with various games without adding unsupported hacks into the mix. I spent hours getting a playable FOV in Borderlands. I have been tearing my hair out keeping this setup running on a number of occasions. I'm just trying to save you the grief, if you enjoy that sort of thing more power to you.

SoftTH currently only supports DX9 games, which limits your options considerably.

If you go windowed gaming (assuming the games support windowed mode) you cannot take advantage of bezel compensation in PLP, nor will you be able to use Crossfire.

Depending on the technology and size of the 16" widescreen they may be a very poor choice of wing monitors for a 23" 1080p. 23" 1080p is 95PPI, so your 16" widescreens would have to be 1280x800 to match. 800 pixels is quite narrow for web pages and such, which will limit the usefulness of the wing monitors. If you don't match the PPI you'll have distortion issues in windowed gaming. If the 16" widescreens are TN panels you'll have viewing angle issues due to their rotation - IPS and MVA do much better in that respect, although MVA may not be fast enough for gaming and IPS tends to be more expensive.

I personally had a 20-30-20/20-20-20 PLP/LLL setup which drove me nuts in games so I switched to first 5x24" 1920x1200 portrait, then 30-30-30/22-22-22-22 LLL/LLLL because gaming was good on the portraits but it was terrible for watching videos.

hmmm..

How about instead of buying a widescreen 16" I get one of those square looking monitors about 15/16" to come close to the "height" size of my monitor and it would be used as landscape same as my main monitor. but monitor those size usually only use VGA input, it's rare to have a DVI invput on monitors those size, so if I use VGA to DVI-D adapter on those monitors will eyefinity work just fine?

Imma be using mini-displayport to DVI active display adapter? and two DVI-D to VGA adapters for the two extra monitors.
