Question about external (USB) floppy drives

say windows won't install and you need to use drivers off a floppy to get it working...would the usb ports recognize the external floppy drive so i could install the drivers?
 
Probably not. Unless they are recognized by BIOS, which I would say is next to nihl.
 
so what's the point of it? heh. I spent forever trying to install windows on an SATA hard drive.
 
Dont you have a floppy? Hell, I'll send one to you for cost of shipping +$2.
 
nah i have it installed now, but i didn't feel the need for the for a floppy...they're like $6 I know but bleh.


edit: i had 2 on old computers but one turned out to be fried.

You may be able to boot from it, but the windows install prog is looking for an internal floppy, not a USB device.

If you can boot from it, you can install off of it. That is what boot from implies.

Have you tried it? The XP install comes on a CD. Just because you can boot from a USB device doesn't mean that the XP install prog will recognize an attached USB floppy as a floppy drive.

I have not done this, but I have seen the techs in my group at work do this. They may have a 'special' installer, but it is possible. The BIOS should assign a drive letter to the USB floppy.

To the original question: Yes it should work fine. You may struggle to find which drive letter is the USB Floppy. You may also need to enable or disable USB legacy support in the BIOS. Different setups require different settings.
