hey,
well i have a gift card for costco, they have 3 external HD that I'm looking at:

the Maxtor 750gb
the WD 640gb (usb 2.0)
the WD 1tb (usb, esata...)

now i won't really have the use for 1tb since i was looking mainly at the 640gb but how much difference in transfer speed is there between usb 2.0 and esata. my friend has a usb 2.0 and he transfer a 6gb file in about 4minutes he told me.

what's your insight?

eSata is faster and I would use that for an external hard drive drive over USB 2.0.

USB 2.0 maximum throughput is about 60MB/s theoretical. Those hard drives read/write faster than 60MB/s. Closer to 90-100MB/s. eSata is going to support a maximum around 300-370MB/s.

An eSATA external HDD would be best; they usually come with USB 2.0 connectors as well, but if it also has eSATA support, the more the merrier. :D

eSATA does up to 300mb/s. If you would like the higher speed, getting something with it is a good choice.

I have a Rosewill external eSATA/USB enclousre with a Seagate ST31000333AS in it. USB speeds don't break 30mb/sec. eSATA does > 90 mb/sec

so i should go get the 1Tb at costco which has all 3 connector.
any opinions on why i shouldn't get the WD my book home edition 1Tb?

it's just that if i get the 640gb (it will be free since i have the gift card), if i get the 1Tb, i have to spend about $45
