i was working on a friend's laptop the other day, who btw had exceeded his trojan limit, (bah) and as his dvd which came with his laptop was toast, we connected an external lite-on DVD (very modern) to the usb port. well, to make a long story short, it was not recognised in DOS, would not serve to boot the comp.

Meanwhile I have an external USB floppy drive which was recognised on that laptop and almost all devices.

So are all external DVD drives like that?

i am not sure if it would be the drive or the system... i have a roswill external and i install most of my systems with it ratherthen buying dvd roms.

would it be the drive or does the laptop support usb devices?

ya could be the laptop itself. it did recognise the external floppy usb...

in the bios there must be a "boot from usb" device option.
If there isn't well.. :(

i don't think there is that... it did recognise my floppy usb perfectly. i don't have the laptop here. i gave it back to my friend, told him to get a compatible dvd drive for the laptop itself.
