Question about ECC RAM and socket 939 processors

Here's one that's caught me out and need a definate answer:

Does the AMD Socket 939 processors (the FX series) need ECC RAM? The AMD website says it requires registered RAM. I know this sounds noobie-ish, but is registered RAM and ECC RAM the same?

This has confused be, especially cause i'm interested at looking at this area. I'm hoping some of you memory gurus could help me. Thanks.
 
Socket 940 FX chips - need registered RAM
Socket 939 FX chips - do NOT need registered RAM
