ok, im bout to purchase a lite on +/- dvd rw, and i was wondering before i go out and buy it if + dvdr's are better than the -'s, i haven't had any research on these and i thought i would poke around in here to get some more definitive answers, if one is better than the others, why is it, im going to probably be using them mostly to copy movies so my dad can have a copy and i can have a copy, im sick of him always loosing my copies, any suggestions on a differnt burner or are liteon's usually well made(i've been using lite on for some time now) any suggestions would be help ful thanks

As long as your dvd player is newer (last 2 years) either will work fine.
You should be able to find a buner for a few bucks more that can do both.

The following are just opinions.

Not a big Lite-On DVD burner fan. Money to burn then Plextor is the choice. Two burners I have installed and been happy with, NEC2500 and the Pioneer 107 (No customer complaints yet). NEC 2500 is probably the best bang for the buck out there.

Media: 6 months ago I would have said DVD+R media was better than -R, but I have seen some crappy +R media creep up(cough, Memorex, cough). Now, I just look for "Made in Japan" on the labels, and so far this has worked out well. As far as compatability with players, both (+/-)seem about the same.

Now for actual info, www.dvdrhelp.com is a good place. You can crosscheck info on media and players and recorders to find out what works with what.

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.

Check that site to see what format your set top DVD player can handle. Also, LiteOns are among the highest rated drives, so the vast majority of people like them. You will struggle to find someone who has a complaint about a LiteOn. I find it hard to believe people can say they're "not a fan" of LiteOn. The offer all the quality of a Plextor, for much much less. The only things that reviews say about the Plextors are they burn slightly faster. Who cares, really, if your movie is done 20 seconds faster. I'd rather have the extra cash.

thanks for all the advice, i think i will get the liteon guy and use some decent TDK -R's, i have the bose lifestyle 28 system, which can handle just about anything, i love that system, and umm yea, dvd x copy express seems to be an awesome deal and i work at best buy so it helps that i have that great discount ;) heh

i also have the lite on dvd+r/rw
i have no complaints cept with maxell media does not work in some new dvd players

and

dvd x copy sucks

there are alot of better free software out there like dvd shrink

DVDXCopy Express is the best software out there...nothing is easier. If you have a real version, that you paid for, it works quite well.

dvd shrink is a 1 button backup and then all you do is burn the files to dvd in nero as a dvd

DVDXcopy Express is one button, and does the burning for you....no loss of quality. Can't imagine it being any easier than that. Oh, I've used DVD Shrink many times...not bad, but not the same as DVDXCopy Express.

Love their CD burners, never a complaint after much abuse. Lite-On DVD burners (as mentioned above) seem to be a bit more picky with their media. For the price, one can do better than a Lite-On DVD burner.

$92 for a 411S that can be flashed into the 811S? Tough to find a deal about that. It is a firmware issue that has media troubles, but it's been fixed with firmware revisions. That is not a problem I'd consider enough to keep my from buying a great drive.

I have to disagree with punisher, I love my lite-on 851s. Got it for $80 at officemax a couple of months ago.

I also use the Memorex DVD+R's from BB that were $50 for 50, and I haven't found a DVD player that won't read them (only tried them in 3-4). One caveat, the drive will only burn them at 4x unless you update the firmware with a hacked version that enables 8x.

As for which is better, I thought I heard that -R had slightly higher compatibility, and +R had lower cost. Maybe that was just theoretical, since I've never heard anyone say "my +R's won't play, but -R's will".

TAHNKS guys, i think im goign to stay with my above purchase i mentioned, i get express for like 20 bucks at work, so that will be awesome, thanksssss

I have the Lite-On 411S and has been rock solid since i bought it. You can even hack it to run at 8x.

I did have 1 problem with the flashing of the new firmware. It seems there is a issue with Nvidia Nforce drivers and lite on flasher. I had to uninstall the Microsuck drivers then flash, then reinstall my nforce drivers. Also, i heard that with the addition of the new firmware, alot of old problems were fixed.

Ive been using Xcopy and nero. I did have a problem with freezing while burning using Nero, i solved it by changing my page file and where it was on my HDD's.

well i won't be buying a 4x burner i'd be getting a 8x regardless, i have the money to burn, i might get a nec but im really happy with all the liteon drives i have so i trust their name, i know plextor makes a very nice burner but i like to save a lil bit of money here and there even though i do have the money to spare

You...if your a cheap bastard like you me the 411S and the 401S can be flashed to a 811S....which is a 8x burner.

As of right now though it all depends on the media your going to use. There are no 8x DVD-R on the market atm, I think the 8x DVD+R are due sometime around christmas of this year...dont know for sure. I havent seen much info on it.

:D LOve the 401.. I mean 811S myself!
Small correction, 8X +R media is available, check Best Buy, where they have Verbatim DLP 8X +R discs in stock.

guys, go to dvd.box.sk and see a review of dvd maker programs.
dvdshrink goes very bad, with very low quality downs from 8gb to 4gb.
Check it, has samples for every program.

speaking of dvd-burners, are there any that dont burn cd-rw's that would lower the cost because that would be kind of pointless for me to buy that when i already have one

No. You've asked this question before IIRC, and no drive manufacturer makes a drive that can write to only DVDRW discs.
