hi all. i have a few quick questions about dual channel ram.

i currently have 2x512 pc4200 533 mhz ddr2 in dual channel and i want to upgrade to get some more ram.

i'm thinking about getting 2 1gig sticks, but not sure what kind to get. so i guess i'm shooting for dual channel, so both would be in dual channel. i know i lose the 1t timing, so here are the questions...

1. should i use the 3gigs total or should i take out the 2x512 and use the 2x1gig for the 1t timing?

2. since i have all 4 ram slots used, will it revert back to single channel since the 2 channels won't match (2x512 and 2x1gig)?

thanx for your time fellas.

what's your rig?

any two sticks of the same ram will work in dual channel. the kits are only called dual channel to confuse people ;)

1. depends on the programs you use and the sticks you get.. and if all 4 play nice together

2. nope

i have a dell. =[ and it's just default 533mhz pc4200 ram. i'm planning to buy this ram since the price is right. it's got better timing than the same ram for $10 less at 5-5-5.

i know timing doesn't matter since i have a dell, but from what i can gather, the dell 9100 supports up to pc5300 and the OCZ one is pc5400. is the ram compatible?

and now that you know that it's a dell, 3gigs or 2gigs? how much is the 1t timing worth?

if it's a dell, it means intel chipset, which means no command rate option. it's always at 2T no matter what

the ram *should* be compatible. pc5300 and 5400 are two ways of naming the same thing. really dumb imo
