I figured i would ask about the status of dual channel on older AMD XP's. Heres what im dealing with:
I have a rather trying problem. When i set my ram to its default PC3200 speeds, i get errors in prime95, however when its underclocked, i dont get errors for 18-24 hours in most cases. Anyway, currently i run my ram in dual channel. The few things i have not tried to fix this problem were moving my ram to different slots, ot turning dual channel access off, or testing them individually.
My memory does not fail any tests in memtest86, however in prime95, at pc3200 speeds, it will fail within 1-10 seconds usually. I think the longest it ever made it as 13 mins. Now im not entirely sure if i should trust the results of prime95 to be 100% accurate, but if its failing there, it could be elsewhere too.
A few select tests that ive done. There are more, i just didnt think i should post them all.. i did try pretty much every combination of factors. Only thing that was conclusive was that RAM @ 200mhz = test failure.
I have tried lowering the multiplier of my processor to 5 and increasing the fsb to 200, no matter what setting i have my comp set to, if the fsb is 200, i will get errors in prime95.
Another thing i havnt quite tried yet was testing the FSB numbers between 166 and 200 to see when exactly i start getting those errors.
I read a few articles that said there really is no advantage to running in dual channel mode because of programs not being able to take advantage of the increased bandwidth at stock speeds. I intend on running this comp at 10x200 or 11x200 if i can ever get my ram to not instantly fail prime tests at the PC3200 speeds.
Can anyone give me a second opinion on their thoughts of dual channel advantages/disadvantages. Im looking to get back into trying to fix this problem (gave up for 6 months this time around) Should i start this time around by swapping sticks, doing single stick tests, and testing non dual channel configurations, or just turning dual channel mode off? Also, would it even effect me at stock-ish speeds for either my 2500+ or if i did get it overclocked to 3200+ speeds?
Any help would be appreciated.
