if the hard drive is not being used as the bootup one(. I.E. it is a notebook HD that has been removed and put into an enclosure.), is there any reason to make an image of the disk. Or if it is an external one, can I just copy and paste the entire contents onto another hard drive and have it work fine?
 
Guessing that you don't have any encrypted/compressed files or complex permission/security Acess Control Lists (if you don't no what that means, then you don't have the problem) you'll be fine with a copy and paste. Make sure that any files you transfer are complete and correct on the new drive before nuking the old one. If the drive had a Windows install on it but won't anymore, after backing up any of your data on it, you can delete \Documents and Settings, \Program Files, \Windows and all of the files in the root directory, which is what's on the drive after an XP install finishes, unless your OEM put more stuff on there.

It sounds like you're putting a drive that used to be a Windows boot drive into a semi retirement as a data only drive. If that's the case and you don't want to reformat, then you can delete the three folders I named, which the Windows XP setup program creates. That will free up quite a bit of space (at least 1GB) without having to reformat. Sorry for the poor grammar.
