Whenever I start up my old desktop it keeps saying "disk drive may have bad sectors." and then it goes on to do scan disk and then it goes on to do this cluster thing in which it didnt finish last time...

What does this stuff mean and how can I fix it?

Also sorry if this is the wrong section.

Thanks fellas,
Blake

i believe it means that part of your hard drive is corrupt and it cant place data there.
scan disk should be fixing it i think if you enable fix disk errors or whatever it says.

Unfortunately I never tend to get the post I need to make in the correct location so if a mod could please help me out that would be great...

Right now its doing some type of cluster scan so hopefully it can fix it.

I do a surface scan, however its like examining the clusters but after awhile it like fails or something and it says "press any button to continue starting windows."

What can I do fellas?

Thanks

Windows 98...yes its when I try to start it up, it has been giving me trouble just recently....Is there anything I can really do besides try to run ths Drive C: cluster thing?

Its running right now, but sometimes it will like fail/cancel out or something....and I read somewhere that when it does that Drive C stops spinning or something??

Any help appreciated,

Thanks.

Blake

humm if scan disk isnt working i would recomend backing up (or can you not get fully booted up?) and then reformating..and not quick formating

I might be able to back it up to a further location...however if worst comes to worst I will end up reformatting although I dont want to have to do that...

I honestly dont remember what it was doing but no it wasnt going straight to windows...however the cluster thing is going through fully I hope now its 45% so I hope it continues to finish.

at times, the manufacturer's utility can scan the surface for bad sectors. I do not know if it can help you recover the data though.

Word, it hasnt found any bad clusters, just a bunch of unused ones and some used and used ones.....
