Ive heard different stories when it comes to cpu usage when it comes to soundcards vs onboard audio. So do audio cards use less cpu usage or not? I''m currently looking to upgrade my audio solution so I can hear songs better but I'm also a gamer and fps counts!


Can anyone recommend any nice current cards that wont break the bank?
 
Built in WDM chips use the CPU intensively to process the digital signals. Audio cards have an onboard DSP (digital signal processor) to do all the dirty work, taking the load off the CPU.

It's really not that big a deal, depending on your other system components. What are they?

Also, what are your speakers? Because, if you're looking for better sound quality, you have to get decent speakers before you run into the limits of average onboard sound.
 
CPU usage varies alot from mobo to mobo and card to card. Cards tend to do it less so - but not always. Replacing a good onboard solution with a shitty card isn't going to help any.

My system is in my sig. My speakers are some 3 yr old logitech 2.1s. Im thinking about replacing them soon.
 
Establish a total sound budget. The vast majority of that should go towards a speaker rig. That's where most of your money will find the best use.
