Question about Contrast Ratios...

I'm currently looking into getting one of two 22" widescreen monitors for gaming. Monitor A has a 1200:1 contrast ratio while Monitor B has a 700:1 contrast ratio. Unfortunatly, Monitor A is currently out of stock everywhere and I won't be able order it until next Tuesday. Other then the contrast ratios, all other specs on these monitors are exactly the same. Monitor B is more expensive then Monitor A as well. (about $20 more)

So, should I take a gamble and wait a week for Monitor A (one with higher contrast ratio) to come back or should I just go straight for Monitor B? There is no chance that I will be able to get A when it comes back out. Is the difference in contrast ratios worth the wait?

Sorry if this post is a little confusing...

what monitors r u talking about?
maybe there are another specs other than the contrast in the monitors that u should consider.

the specs that the company writes, are not always true. so a monitor with bad specs can sometimes be allot better that the good spec monitor.

Speaking strictly in terms of contrast ratio... I'd go with the 1200:1

"defined as the ratio of the luminosity of the brightest and the darkest color the system is capable of producing."
I would think: larger contrast ratio = smoother colors, broader spectrum of light
but i'm no expert...

The sceptre seems better hands down no ? HDMI support too. only thing that seems better on the viewsonic is a slightly better refresh rate by 10hz on the vertical stat wise.

Not 100% on the sceptre name either, personally never heard of it till recently but...
and viewsonic has had a good rep over the years
you may need some first hand info from a sceptre user.....

As you state contrast is merely your darkest black divided by your lightest white. But I am willing to bet the static contrast of this monitor is 700:1 since it uses the same panel as the rest. Therefore making the 1200:1 a dynamic contrast which probably wont have much relevence.

Also the contrast spec is easily altered depending on how the spec is measured. this is how plasmas get 10000:1 contrasts and such. If you measure it in a dark room vs one with normal ambient light you will get a much hihger reading. So in my opinion contrast is not the best spec to go off of.

Ahh IC IC good to know. I do remember reading a bit on static vs dynamic contrast ratio , Too bad the manufacturers don't give you both....

I guess its always best to compare Contrast ratio, refresh hz, response time, panel type & dotpitch, anything more or as important i'm missing ?

So you guys think the Sceptor is a better buy because of the contrast ratio?

It is cheaper I guess...I just don't feel like waiting a week to order it.
