If you were to build a system with the Conroe extreme cpu and a really crappy video card, then try to run a game like fear on high settings...would the cpu try to make up what the graphics card can't?

You will see a minimal improvement if you are already video card limited (unless you reduce resolution to something like 160x120 at 8 bit color.)

More information about what you're considering(what vid card) will make more intellegent comments possible.

Currently, all games are GPU bound and its likely to remain that way for quite some time. My personal suggestion to you, is to drop the cpu down to an E6600 or E6700 and spend the extra cash that you would have put into the 6800 on better video.

Keep in mind, no matter what conroe you choose, there will be no CPU bottleneck.

I say get a E6300 or E6400 and excellent videocard(s), lol. A GPU bottleneck will always be there. And a pathetic videocard with a Extreme processor will results in performance only equal to that of the pathetic videocard, no more.

i guess an analogy would be if you took the motor from your '63 corvair and put it into a zonda, it might go a little faster than your corvair. but not much, its limited to a certain amount of torque no matter what car the motor is in. buy a 6400 or a 6600, and the 5 or 6 yards you save will buy you the top of the line card from either ati or nvidia, and still have change to bring your girlfriend out for pizza.
