Question about Classic mode

I was thinking about nabbing a copy of Quake III Gold off of ebay so I can play it on my iBook, but then I checked the OS requirements and realized that it doesn't run OS X and that I would therefore have to run it in classic mode. My question is this: Does classic mode carrry driver support? In other words, if I were to buy this game and play it in classic mode would everything look like crap or like it is supposed to?

To answer your question it will run in classic but you take a big hit on preformance. The thing with quake 3 though is they have an update that will let it run in 10.1 or higher(if I remember). Hell they have a universal binary for it now(although I think that is third party)

You'll need a PPC mac to run classic mode afaik. There is no classic support for Intel Macs.

You are correct in your assumption of classic mode = os9 emulation.

Classic mode really isn't os9 emulation as it runs os9 on top of 10 but yea you can pretty much think of it that way.

You would probably be much better off if you could reboot and start up entierly in OS 9. That way you don't have to have all the uneeded OS X crap in memory. But you can only do that if your BIOS supports it (and i forget how to tell) so yeah, i think that would be better than running 9 on top of 10.

This is true but the g5's don't support booting off os9 and none of the intel ones do(hell they don't support classic). Also the later g4's like the last few emacs, the later imacs, and the alu powerbooks don't support os9.

A few nits to pick:

Macs don't have a BIOS.

And even if they did, it's wouldn't be the BIOS that made it possible to boot Mac OS pre-X. It requires a special ROM. Hardware. Not BIOS.
