question about card upgrading

im looking to build a pc for playing mostly cs and cs:s

right i have a evga 6800 ultra pci-e lined up to be my card for an intel based pc, my question is should i just wait till the 6800 512mbs come out, or should i just got with what i have picked out now

Well IMO you are more than ready for CS and CS:S. I run it w/ a GFX 5700LE and it runs like a charm. Don't waste the money unless u plan on playing the SP HL2 or Doom3 w/ everything maxed.
 
i would say go w/ the 6800....

if you have TONS of money to burn then wait but expect to pay a premium as a 512 meg card will cost you plenty.

a 6800 should be very very very good for counterstrike.
 
CS and CS:Source aren't the most demanding games out there. Besides 512MB benches can already be found on the net. Guess what? They are the same speed as the 256MB cards right now. Eventually games will be made to take advantage of the increased graphics memory. But not for awhile. Your safe buying the 256MB card now.
 
i agree with sir-frag, the 512 may yeild higher benchmarks but by the time there is actually a diffrence between 512 and 256 well be in another card gen
 
Most games don't take advantage of the full 256 on high-end cards at the moment so your safe to get a good price on a 6800 Ultra 256MB. I got my AGP PNY for only £295 which included my delivery + VAT. The PCI-e is the same price. Your so lucky to have PCI-e :)

If you're looking to playing DOOM3, Farcry or Thief 3 - don't think twice about getting a GeForce with shader 3.0 support.I did hear a rumour about Doom3 not fully implenting UltraShadow 2 in their game - they better bring out the 1.2 patch soon!

Also, if you have a Creative soundcard, (or nForce in most cases), you will have game performance issues. So avoid any nForce upgrades and get the best audio card for 5.1 experience in Doom3. The audio engine in Doom3 is buggy but this is the price for movie-like graphics which are just as good as ATi's.

Make sure you have room for the bigger 6800Ultra as it takes up two slots. The ATi X850 takes up just one slot and requires at least a 350watt PSU - The 6800Ultra requires just under 400watts. The X850 will support shader 3.0 like nVidia flagship GPUs so the competition will be hot!

The ATi 512MB cards are due out first, probably at the end of the first quarter next year with luck, and maybe the nVidia with be due out 6 months later. The extra time will give nVidia time to stick new features on that will concentrate on higher resolutions for HD, plus time to tune their drivers up near the very high standards as ATi.

ATi have actually already produced the 512MB PCI-e card but at the moment it's still really a prototype.
