Hi guys,

There is a lot of talk about the 3DC technology that the X800 series cards have built into them. Now I heard that Nvidia also has a similar, albeit different, compression method too...is there any truth to this or am I making this up from a dream I had or something?

Yep its called DXT5. Its a bit slower and doesn't look quite as good, but it was used throughout Doom3 and FarCry and no one seemed to complain so :p

3Dc and DXT5 are both supported by the X800's and DXT5 is currently the best compression method that the 6800's support. 3Dc is just an extension to the DXT5 compression method and there are only minimal differences. There is not much of a performance difference and you would never be able to notice an IQ difference in-game.

I've ran the 3Dc demo by Humus which is a "worst case scenario for non 3Dc cards" and i did not notice any artifacting on the textures compared to the 3Dc pics. Everything looked sharp and well detailed.

3Dc makes things slighty blurier and DXT5 slightly sharper.

Something like Smart Shader 3.0 is officially supported by DirectX 9.0c while 3Dc is not supported by anything. Its used at the discretion of the software developer. DXT5 has been around for a long time now and ATI tried to push it as well and it was never really used.

3Dc isn't even invented by ATI, it's DXT5 with their modifications. It's S3's invention(S3TC) and licensed to MS(DXTC).

DOOM 3 uses DXT5 compression so do you think it looks like crap? :D

hehe...thats the info that i wanted...i knew there was something about 3DC that sounded familiar but i cudnt remember what it was...DXT5 is what didnt have in the equation, it all makes sense now...
