i noticed that in most test, the 9800pro with 128mb performs the same as the 9800 with 256mb. when will that extra 128mb actually help in a game? my monitor only goes up to 1280x1024. would that extra 128mb help in games like farcry, doom3, or halflife2? thx

Pretty much the extra 128 won't do anything. The only reason you would need it is for max AA and AF at 2048x1536. At those setting it would run at 4 fps or something though. If you want to see what happens IQ wise when a card runs out of memory look at these shots of UT2k4.

The top one is on a 32 MB card, the other on a 128. As you can see the card ran out of memory so you see there is no texture on the gun.

Argh! Lousy trial image server! If anyone knows of any good FREE image servers please tell me so I can fix the post.

I think Call of Duty with extra texture settings and semi-high resolutions eats up more than 128mb of video ram. Can't really verify this with any real benchmarking. All I can say is this, I can play Call of Duty fine with the high texture settings at 1280x1024 and get solid 70-90 fps. The second I use the extra textures, my fps goes way down to 20-30. A jump like that usually means that the video card has run out of memory and is going across the AGP bus for extra memory. Then again it could just be my ti4400 is choking under such high settings, never know.

do u guys know if the 256mb version has good overclocking abilitities?? i mean if the the 9800128mb overclocks better, wouldnt it be better to just get the 128mb one? i heard that the 256mb is in some cases slower than the 128mb version.
