Question: 7950 H60 Mod

I have a spare H60 that I'm looking to stick onto my reference 7950 in order to get rid of some of that unbearable noise while playing Metro Last Light (can anyone say 83C with 75% fans?).

I know there have been many people to undergo something like this, so I'm just looking for some advice.

From what I understand I need

  • Copper Shim
  • VRM Cooling
  • Bracket

I know that Dwood from OCN sells the brackets and copper shims, but it looks like he's gone rogue and nothing has been shipping out for a month, so I'm looking for alternatives.

Will I be able to mount the H60 using just zip-ties as opposed to a bracket? What kind of thermal paste should I use? Which adhesive do you recommend for placing heatsinks on the VRMs?

Thanks in advance to everyone!

I have two spare 79XX series brackets with the fan mount.

I tried to put it on one and killed it so I didnt do another. It was probably bad VRM cooling install.

check it here: http://triptcc.com/shop/ here sells basic bracket and bracket+fan mount also the copper shim

That's Dwood that I was talking about in the OP. He hasn't fulfilled any orders for around 3 weeks, and has all but disappeared from the community, so there's no telling when I'd be able to get any parts from him. I'm going to need to look elsewhere.

i had no idea seriously about that problem.. sorry..

I came very close to getting one, but went with the arctic 7970 Xtreme route instead.

Hey, i've done this mod.

People are reporting recently that you can ziptie the H60's square or circle blocks. You'll need a shim but since you won't have a bracket, you need an EK 7900 series 0.5mm shim. I just sold mount, fan, heatsinks, and shims (dwood / ek) cuz I can't post in the FS threads here :(
EK shim is $4 on frozencpu.com plus some minimal shipping. This mod can be a real headache.

I'll save you the trouble and list what you need to buy..
