Query on the x700 pro

Hey guys, Im new to the forums, but my friend tells me this is the best place to get answers, so I figured I'd bother you guys for a sec.

My current rig is a Dell Dimension 8400. I got it as a graduation gift from my uncle. If it had been up to me, I would have been built from scratch, but you cant complain about a free gift.
Anyways, these are my specs, except that it has a gig of RAM, and the videocard is an x300.

I want to upgrade my PC in about a year. Preferably with the release of Hellgate, so I can run that puppy at the highest settings and then some. Anyways, thats a while from now, and I really wanna play FEAR, HL2, Battlefield 2, etc now. Best Buy has an x700 pro on Black Friday for $100. Is this card a good idea to grab for a placeholder until I get a new rig? Can it run FEAR, HL2, BF2, etc at medium and 1280x1024? Would you guys recommend this purchase? If not, why?

I guess it would have helped to have made this thread a bit earlier, but I just found out about the deal. No biggy if I miss it.

is the x700pro agp or pci-e?? if its pci-e then youll be fine. if will run FEAR, BF2, HL2 and others at 1024x768 with medium settings, but 1284 x 1024 is abit much to ask from a 100 dollar card.

Its PCIe, and I can live with 1024x768. Its just to last me for a year or two. Im getting tired of WoW. Its the only game that will run decently on my x300. Thanks.

no problem, the x700pros can be AWESOME clocking cards when better cooling is added

Best buy is having the PCI express and agp versions for $199-$100 rebate= $99.....

I would rather go to newegg and get the 6600GT for $139-$40 rebate= $99

I could only find an AGP 6600GT for $99. Well, on the 4 front page sales. I'll check their entire site, but I dont think they offer the PCIe for $99. And, I dont have a mailing address at college, so if I order it online, I wouldnt see if for a long while, Christmas at the latest, about 1-2 weeks at the earliest. Id rather pick it up right away, but the 6600GT is alot better of a card.

the 6600gt isnt too much better then an x700pro, only in certain games does it pull ahead.

yeah man, I love my x700. The overclock I have is PERFECTLY stable with my zalman cooler. It runs all those games fine... not at great resolutions ... HL2 I can crank up all the way and it looks fine to me. Even on lost coast I can put AA at 2X. I definately reccommend it.

the x700 will play FEAR 1024x768 with all medium settings? damn, my 6600GT plays 800x600, smoother, and i've read, even in the read me, to play at lower resolutions and turn up the AA, which is what i did. of course, it could be intel related.
