Quad SLI Performance Decrease

Hey all,

Before I go out and get a new PSU (or an addon PSU), I want to see if anyone else had this kind of issue.

It seems that entering games like BF2, HL2, FEAR, etc, I get fantastic frame rates. However, during the game, the framerates really start bottoming out (ex, BF2 starts out around 90+FPS and ends around 45-60FPS. Reboots seem to help, but only for a short time.

Now, I've been through my computer top to bottom, and this is the only thing I can think of. Rig should be in my sig. Latest BIOS, latest patches, latest driver (cleaned with DCpro), etc.

Thanks,
Ed

That is very strange for a high performance pc like that, maybe driver issue or you need to setup a profile for the game? I hate to say it, but try "turning it down" maybe.

perhaps the cards are getting very hot and are throttleing? hows the temps?

Heat is pretty good. Idle low 50s, 70-80 full load.

Profiles are created for the games. Performance is High Quality (better framerates with this setting), and most options are set in the driver (16AF, 4XAA (up to 32XSLIAA), Multisampling or SS TRAA. Single Monitor performance, and SLI set up.

Check your background processes?

Make sure a resource sucker like a virus/spyware scan isn't running.

my guess is heat

you need a lot of cooling , open the side of the pc and put a house fan directly into the pc and try again

I have 4 120mm fans blowing directly on the MB (two right above the video cards. Throttle threshold is 122 degrees C, and I'm not reaching by a long shot in any of the games.

As for resources, I recently re-installed the OS, etc. Virus and spyware free. :)

I'll see if I can log the temps next go-round though. Thanks!

Well, beats the crap out of me. :)

I played BF2 for an hour and a half (1.4). FRAPS showed my FPS between 85 and 101 with all the bells and whistles.

Maybe it was 1.3...now to check the other games as well.

It could be a memory leak (which is why the reformat could have fixed it). Do you know what programs you had installed?

Oscillating fans next to computers = bad

messes up your hard drives

Well, the reformat happened *before* all the problems. :)

Anyway, for BF2, all I did was clear the cached textures and it seemed to have cleared it (maybe even 1.4). I'm going to check the other games and see what the story is. Possibly all the driver option changes didn't work properly with the cached textures. All I know is that it was a joy to play it last night.

As for memory leaks, Perfmon didn't show anything out of the ordinary and I'm pretty much running standard kit as far as software goes.

Thanks for everyone's help. I appreciate the shot in the dark responses as they help me go down paths I may not have thought of. :)

Don't do this.. if your computer case is designed properly with adequate case fans and proper air flow, there is no way opening the side of your case and putting a house fan against it will help you. In fact, I'd guess your temps would be worse after shoving a house fan against the hardware. This is a reason people have periphs die on them!

Agreed, running the tins open will only mess up the airflow, stick to a closed case with proper cooling installed.

Your psu doesnt have enough amps.

Minimum of a 450 Watt power supply.(Single Card)
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 28 Amp Amps.)

Minimum 550 Watt for *SLI* mode system.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 36 Amp Amps.)
An available 6 pin PCI-E power connector (hard drive power dongle to PCI-E 6 pin adapter included with card)

Newegg says your psu has dual 12v rails with 22amps which is not enough even if your running on different rails.

Problem solved. Your running the risk of frying your psu and taking out other things with it if it goes.

You need a Quad SLI psu not a SLI psu such as
