OK, well, got everything set up and I'm ready to fire up the rig, so I hit the power button and... nothing

then I remember to turn on the PSU!

Hit the power button, it turns on, but then like 20 seconds in, it shuts off. Keeps throwing 45, then 88 and 87, 11, 28, 2E, 2A, then FF and shut down

Ive tried resetting the bios and that did nothing but buy me a few seconds. The more often I do it without waiting the less time it stays up.

I get no outut on the screen, just the bios code on the mobo itself. No beeps, just the code.

Tried looking some of them up in the manual (not much help) and this is what they say
45 - POST device initialization
87 - Configure Motherboard devices
88 - Initialize BIOS data area
11 - Load alternative registers with initial POST value
28 - Autosize DRAM
2E - 1-3-4-3 Rm Failure on data bits of low byte of memory bus
2A - Clear 512kb of base RAM
FF - ?? it just shuts off

it switches around alot but stays steady on 45 and 28 the most
When It goes the longest it goes 28 > 2A > 2E . shutdown

Ive cleared BIOS, unplugged everything but the keyhboard, moved around the fans, I'm getting ready to start swapping out RAM and CPUs but with all 16 sticks and 4 CPUs that could take a while

Any help is great, or pointing me to help is good to
I want to get this up and folding, HELP!!
 
Try with just 1 stick of ram by each CPU to start.
It sounds like a Ram problem to me.

I know the CPUs are good, they came out of a working rig.
 
OK, major problem, this is bigger than the bios issues

The heat sinks dont touch the CPU

um, WTF?? how do i FIX THAT?
 
update, tried CPU 0 only (havnt checked to see if HS is full on but the HS warms up, assuming its not on right) with 2 sticks

got a bunch of boot numbers, thne I made it to actually displaying BIOS startup on the TV for a second before it died. I'll check the HS and see what I can do

any suggestions for how to make them touch?
 
oh so just your standard 1U heatsink? I dunno, can you screw it down more? Also, it could be designed for use with a thermal pad, instead of thermal paste.
 
its got paste pre applied tho, and its screwed as far as it goes
 
thanks, ive been gettin pretty pissed with this, that made me chuckle

any other ideas? do you think I could just let it gravity mount? (take out the screws?)
 
not a good idea. The pressure helps fills the gaps between the cpu and the heatsink.
 
the gap couldnt get much bigger than it is now (not touching)
 
All that I can think of is to try a thin copper plate or different heatsinks.

You said you changed the backplates right?
What did you use?
 
trying using paste now since it could be a bit thicker, and Ive made it in

OK, not really, getting a Nvidia disk read error, but its better than nothing. I'm gonna take off the heatsink and see how it spread
 
Oh yeah, backplates. DUH. Make sure you're using the blackplate that came with the cpu
 
im using the plates that came with the tyan board
no, cant take pics, but the HS wasnt even reaching the CPU. I put paste on there and it was thick so it must have bridged it, I made it to some output on tv atleast.

OK coverage is about 75 % of the surface area, and I used a good size amount

any ideas why my keyboard randomly doesnt work?
 
ok, So I put on a lot of AS5 and I made it to the BIOS options, showing my CPU temp as 61 and climbing, is that standard for a 1U heatsink? Any links to where to buy cheaper active HS's? (mine have no fan)
 
Bridging the gap with a shitload of thermal paste isn't going to help. Its meant to fill the microgaps/surface imperfections and should be as thin as possible to maximal thermal transfer.

You're going to need a new sink.

damn, whyd you have to tell me what I already know? O well, I guess it just keeps me from fucking up this rig, but I really wanted to run it tonight. Any ideas for some good HS/Fs ? Remember, I need to stay short because of the daughter card thing

I think it's time for zip ties.

Many a time have I used them on HS...... just never on a proc.

First time for everything :D
 
My first computer had the heatsink held on by nothing more then a zip tie. Granted I was still really young and wasn't exactly pushing any sort of limits so it worked fine. I dont think that would work to well with folding though ;)

I'd agree that is it not a long term fix, however it would let him get a post out of the system.

Then he can see what temps are after an OS install.
 
Is there no way to put spacers on the screws to draw up the extra slack? Shorter screws? is there a piece that lays over the top of the HS that the screws hold down or do they go through the HS itself? If there is an extra piece maybe you could fashion a full-surround spacer from wood or metal to take up the extra distance. Last resort wouldbe to place a copper plate in between the sink and the heat spreader. that increases your temps but is better than nothing.
 
stick a quarter in between the heatsink and the chip to bridge the gap? not optimal thermal transfer but better than paste only.

I mean the HSFs are flat all way along the bottom so you are saying when you put the screws in it lifts the HSF off the CPU?:confused:

If the screws are too long and the backplate is not threaded the whole way though....

Screw stop spinning and you have a HSF that is levitating.

At least that what I think is happening.
 
As others have mentioned earlier, something isn't compatible with something else. Either the HSFs are not made for the motherboard socket or the hardware to fasten them isn't fully compatible, ie. partial threading problem. One of the big drawbacks to high-end server boards is the limited choice in aftermarket cooling options. I know, been there before. :(
 
Vaulter been doing some research and i think i know what is going on.

The backplate is not the right one.

Socket 939/940/754/F(1207) coolers are interchangeable.
HSFs are listed to support all these platforms.

From reading the reviews on the mobo on newegg one guy said he had to change out the backplate for his HSFs.
My thought is if you buy a 940 backplate it will solve your problems.
Helluva lot cheaper than new HSFs

I'm gonna spring for 2 active HS and maybe try one of those other plates too, see which one works. Anyways, got a work around In my other thread, it's kinda funny but I made it into WHS so I think the board is fine

Not sure why it wasn't throwing a heat code flrhokj

Do you have any projections on what kind of PPD that system will crank out with 8 sockets?

I have seen only one person post times with an octal, but forget exactly what they were. Possibly looking at something between 50-60K PPD depending on frequency, maybe higher.
