Hello all,

I currently run an ATI x850xt on a Gigabyte ultra SLI board (Athlon x2 3800+). I use 3 monitors - 2 on my x850xt and 1 more on an ati radeon 7500 plugged into the pci slot. Since I have 2 pci-e slots in my mobo, can i just attach another pci-e card and no longer use my radeon 7500? It just frees up a PCI slot for me and also allows me to run a better card.

At the same time, can I not run crossfire on my ultrasli board?

If I cannot setup crossfire, is it OK to still get a crossfire edition card and just plug it in for use for my 3rd and 4th monitors?

You can't run crossfire in a SLI board. As far as I know there is nothing from preventing you from running the two cards individually though. The only thing that is board/card dependent is the combined mode. There should be nothing holding you back from running 4 monitors. You wouldn't need to buy the "crossfire edition" of the card, or even an ATi card.
I ran 3 monitors for a long time til I got a new desk without enough space for it, but I have never tried with the new SLI/Crossfire cards yet, so I don't know from experience.
 
as far as i know with 2d stuff you can just run any cards you want and windows will deal with it

as said you can use multi-GPU rendering though even if you run 2 NV cards or 2 ATi cards on a xfire mobo(as far as i know with ATi any way)

so yea any old PCIe card will do
