quad gpu question

I'm thinking of putting together a quad 8800gt rig for folding, but I'm a little concerned about having to do the extended desktop thing. If I have all 4 cards hooked up to a KVM will that work?



 
Eekers tkam :eek: I'm not even sure I know what the "extended desktop " thing is :confused:

I was considering just installing a 8800GT in a Q6600 that is already hooked up to a KVM switch. So hopefully I'm on the same page as you would you please keep us posted, I've never heard of a KVM switch and a 8800GT GPU being a problem. (please speak up Xilikon and all you other computer gurus out there) :confused:

Don't look at me, I didn't even mess with multi-GPU yet so you are better off with Tigerbiten :p

 
As long as Windoze thinks there a monitor attached to each card them the GPU client will work.
So in theory a KVM switch should work.
It will probably be a question of can you extend the desktop without cycleing through the outputs.

Tedkj would be the person to speak to, but I believe he's heading out on vacation today (length unknown). He's the guy with the 4 GTX280's on one MoBo. I don't think he did anything special other than stick 3 VGA Dummie thingies (don't actually know what they're called) on 3 of the cards and a monitor on the 1st. I'm not sure if there is anyone else that has done 3 or more yet. Most are running two

From what I understand the dummy plugs are required for Vista. I have 2 Multi-GPU boxes
running with XP, with 2 cards each, didn't need plugs to get it working. Also I didn't need to
extend the desktop to the 2nd gpu to get it crunching WU's.

So in essence, Win XP works without VGA terminators or desktop extension on multi-GPU. That's good news and yet one more reason to stick with XP. My question is, did you have any difficulties OC your second card and if not which OC utility did you employ?

 
I didn't have any problems overclocking the cards individually.
I use Rivatuner 2.09, which allows you to select either card to set clocks.
Also has a setting to save clocks, and apply the saved clocks settings at bootup
so you don't have to manually enter clock settings every time the boxen is rebooted.

I have not had to extend my desktop or anything and both of my 8800GTX's are folding.
