I just built a new rig and started with a E8400 oc'd to 4.2 and loved it...but then had a Q9450 fall into my lap and Im glad. Oc'd to 3.5 and it shreds everything i throw at it! I could never do this (as well) with a dualie...(Folding AND playing Cyrsis, flawlessly with room to spare:D)

lol, qft! I never multitasked "that" much before, but now Im realizing thats partial cause i didnt have the raw horsepower for it. Sadly i just jumped ship from being a long time AMD fan and now it would take a massive turn around for me to go back...im done holding my breath, and breathing freely now, thanks intel.

yeah the worst part is them intel bums wont be bumping the Q9450 price down on the next refresh, there just gonna introduce the Q9550 at the same price point. Bastards.

also nehalem will apparently roll out in its lowest end SKU as a quad core for $349... this is slated for Q4.... Looks like ima be spending more money. god damnit.

About the only time that upgrade makes sense is:

1) if someone already has a Phenom compatible motherboard, doesn't want to change the motherboard and can get a good deal on a Phenom.

or

2) gets a really good deal on a Phenom (like I did... $105 retail X4 + $30 motherboard woot!)

or

3) you want the minimal performance gains a 4 graphics slot board can offer for $150, at the expense of lower CPU performance (even with the coming 140W 2.6GHz Phenoms).

At full price and with a motherboard upgrade, it's hard to justify the lower performance and lower overclockability for most people here. A $190 Q6600 + $85 Gigabyte P35 (or $110-$120 Crossfire P35) motherboard can smack down the Phenom 9850 BE on its best day, both @ stock or both overclocked.

Yeah, but it's like AncientTechno said, I am just not impressed with any of AMD's offerings right now. I had high hopes for the Phenoms at pre-launch, but have been let down.
 
So are the quad core Intel processors capable of transcoding 720p h264 files to WMV 720p on the fly?

I want to get a Q6600 G0 and overclock it, but the only use I would have for all that power would be using TVersity to transcode high definition video files and stream them to my Xbox 360 on the fly but I don't even know if the most powerful processors are capable of that.
 
Bloodgod42, for the love of god, get some SMP folding going on that quad...your wasting it with the older client..:)

And oh yeah, once you truly experience a quad, your done with dual core forever.
 
Glad you also have a Q9450 also. I don't think there will be a good reason to buy the new stepping for the q9450 since 45nm doesn't produce as much heat anyways.

I never owned a dual core system. I went from a 5+ years old 2500+ sempron to a Q6600 G0, to a Q9450. Huge difference lol. Now I might make a new system with my brother from my Q6600 system for my brother.

Define "soon". Hasn't happened much as of yet.

By the time it does, Nehalem will be here. Doing what your Q66's and Q9450's do, but better.

I don't keep machines around long, I needed the frequency more than the extra two cores, for games I'll be playing until 2009/Nehalem.

I just build a new system, but its been 3 days and i cannot install an OS in the machine, I've done everything and I dont lie every single thing I've found on internet to try to get it runing. My system is this:

ASUS P5B-VM
4 gig Samsung DDR2 667 (2 x 2gigs)
Samsung SATA HD 400 gigs (HD400LJ)
Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 2.4 ghz
HP dvd 1070i
No video card, no sound card, nothing else.

I've tried installing XP 64 bit but it freezes on "Setup is starting windows", Windows vista ultimate 64 bit but it gets me BSOD with different messages being the most common IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I've tried installing Win XP 32 (the one that gets me more hope) but when the machine is trying to format the disk it reboots. I've tryed to disconect the HD and use the installation disks but they keep freezing or rebooting even when the HD is not conected. I've tried a lot of BIOS tweaks and one of the best results was to downgrade it to previous versions (the new version didn't even let me get into the Terms and conditions page of win XP installation) So I am running out of ideas, the worst part is that I dont have any other machine to check if the parts work one by one. By the way I tried the memtest that comes with the installation of Win vista but with some BIOS configuration it freezes and with some other (usually the DDR frequency changed) it just gets my display with bars of diferent colours. Please help !!! Thanks:(

You should start your own thread, but it could very well be the memory causing this. Remove one of the memory sticks and try memtest again. If it happens again, try the other stick. It could also be your hard drive.

I am extremely happy with my Q9450 doing 3.6GHz at 1.19375V set in BIOS, which reads as 1.176V in CPU-Z. Quite a step up from my Opteron 175 that only went up to 2.6.

the problem is that real parallel programming is not being taught in Universities, so u have to learn it first, and it ain't that easy, actually u have to relearn mostly everything, u need a new way of thinking, so it's [H]ard work. And well u can't teach new trick to old coders ;)

Well, coding for SMP has been happening for years. In most cases, it was relegated to higher end software due to the cost of multi-processor systems. However, in the last few years this has changed. Multi-core machines are commonplace and more software has started to be coded for SMP. Some games are taking advantage of it now as well as a lot of other software. Besides, multitasking is a hell of a lot easier nowadays and you can get more done. Even if you have a couple programs that only make use of two cores, you can run them both at the same time whereas with a dual core you can only run one optimally.

With my quads, I have gotten to the point where the hard drive can be a serious bottleneck. Luckily, I have been using multiple hard drives for a number of years now so I don't hit the hard drive limitation as much. I will do a lot of disk intensive activity at one time which will also need a lot of CPU time. I have the best of both worlds. I would hate to have to go back to a dual core machine for my daily use.

I have 3 quads, a dual and several single core machines. It's almost painful to use a single core machine and I can definitely tell when I'm using a dual core machine. I guess I might just be in the minority of people that uses their system to the fullest extent, but that minority is there and it's growing. Just remember, there was a time when the families with computers were in the minority. Nowadays in the US, families with computers are the majority. Coding for multiple cores is progressing even now. Just because you don't see it yourself today, doesn't mean other people don't. Plus, there is always tomorrow.

Yes. The Q9550 will be replacing it at the same $350 price tag. They will be introducing a new Q9650 (not the QX9650) at the $500 price tag. I'd love to wait for the price drops but don't know when they will occur. All Intel said was Q3 which is anytime between July 1 and September 30. :(
 
To the guy with installation problems. Use 1 stick of 2gb ram while installing. Once the OS is fully installed and up and running. Install the 2nd stick then go into bios, restart system. Everything should be fine afterwards.

As many have said, my feelings are very much in the "once yo go Quad, you'll never go back". I went from a 3.2 e6700 to a qx6700 @ 3.2

The big difference for me is that I have resources tospare with the quad. Until going quad, maximizing resources for whatever game I was playing, etc, always meant stripping down the OS of unneeded services, applications, etc. Alt tabing to look up a quest in Wow, etc. all took there toll on performance.

With a quad, I am full screen wow, or aoc, cod4, whatever, on my main display ( Westy 37" ) and on my peripheral 19" widescreen, I have winamp, browsers, Outlook, IM apps,etc running.

Hell, normally, I would have disabled the Vista gadget bar as useless resource hogs. With a quad, I use it without worries. Usefull gadgets are sweet for realtime monitoring etc.

So even though Im not encoding or doing photoshop, etc, just being able to run several aps while gaming, to me, is what going quad is all about. It helps to be running 8gb ram in a Vista 64 install too, of course, but driving al that is what having a quad is all about!

I'll never go back to anything less.

In a phrase: Too Much RAM (during the install). Dial it back to 2 GB (any version of Windows), then (if you stayed with x64) increase the RAM *after* installing all the updates and patches (including SP2 for XP and SP1 for Vista).
 
I love my quad too, and with 8GB of ram and multiple hard drives to balance the load, it's a screemer.

Just get a Vista SP1 DVD and use that to install, then you avoid pulling RAM, and you get all the fixes in one shot. I grabbed the SP1 64 bit DVD ISO off Bittorrent and used that (you still need a valid license obviously).
 
quad core FTW. People discouraged me...just like with RAID(different story)..but I am quite happy with it. Can't wait to overclock my own
