do 4 core cpus are better, we still don't use dual-core and soon we'll have quad-core, what's up with that? marketing?

You don't use quad core...I could use quad core personally, which is why I have a dual socket 940 board :) Can't have too much video/audio/multitasking/processing going at once, can you ?

:)

I don't know what your talking about. There are tons of programs out there that ultilze dual core. And the ones that don't can be assigned to different core to speed things up.

I was wondering about this as well...within a year of dualcores, we're getting quadcores...is it worth waiting for them if we were planning on building a core2duo system? or, is this mostly to the benefit of those who run servers or are professional video/sound editors?

can 1 program run faster by having dual-core, they are not like raid huh?

run one program on dual core, no. but when was the last time you ran only one program. open task manager. I see 38 processes running. Processes are programs that take CPU resources. The operating system is a program too that takes CPU resources. So next question.

QFT

I have 33 processes running and they are taking up a whopping 2% of my cpu cycles. Wow! A dual core processor would give me 2% boost in speed for single threaded applications.

For the average user I would see quad core as being a gimmick at this point...

There is still not an abudance of software that is available, that is wrtiten to use dual core at this given time. I would not wait for quad core, as for games and your average software, quad core is probablly a long ways out.

Quad core probablly plays more of a role in database activity and 3d CAD, model rendering, at this point

if you run 2 single thread programs on a single core, you will notice a huge slow down. The process has to switch back and forth and back and forth to complete both tasks, since they probably have the same priority.

Cpu's dont like to switch back and forth. You waste cycles, because you call to memory or cache for some data, wait for the delay, process that, send it to memory so you can work on the other task, call memory for data and over and over again. With multi cores, the cpu's have to switch 1/2 or 1/4 as many times to complete all the tasks.

And then when you have a multi thread app, you will see very substantial gains.
