Got my Q9650 installed yesterday, unfortunately while swapping it in I busted a peg on my Scythe Infinity heatsink so I'm on the stock Intel heatsink :(. I may just leave it, not sure, I did put AS5 on it and it's running @ 37C idle and I have it overclocked to 3.6Ghz. It gets up to 55C load. Are those temps good?

Another thing that happened was my BIOS was set to Auto on the vCore and I had the thing running for a couple hours before it shut off. Checked and found it was overheating, running 95C idle lol! Installed Speedfan and noticed the vcore was set to 1.55! Turned it down to 1.2 (not sure what the default is) and that brought it down to it's current 37C idle temp and is now working well, hopefully that didn't hurt anything but glad I caught that rather quickly, not sure why the BIOS auto setting did that lol. Anyway, I'd like to try 4Ghz, you think I can do that with the stock heatsink? What settings should I set my FSB and vcore to try this?

I also dunno if I should just keep the stock heatsink as it seems to be doing OK I think, if not I dunno if I could fix the broken peg somehow on the Scythe or if I should look into some new heatsink. Suggestions?
 
The temps are excellent. As long as you stay under 70C you're fine.

For 4GHz you can try 433x9 ( 3.9 ) or 450x9 ( 4.05) or 466x9. I'd say try the 1st and keep RAM 1-1 ( 866MHz )
 
I am now @ 433x9 for 3.9Ghz, I upped the vcore to 1.325 and nbridge to 1.45. Did that because I initially tried 450x9 for 4Ghz and it loaded Windows almost, got to where it should have brought up the login screen and instead just froze there. Haven't had a chance to really test it thorougly but I know Fear Combat was always picky on CPU overclocks and would always freeze on me when clocked too high on my e6600 so played 30 min of that fine, also ran through 3DMark 06 fine. Temps went to 49C idle and 60C load. Will test more later.

See that your RAM runs synchronously with the FSB at the lowest possible timings (for a start see what SPD has stock 800MHz ). You should be getting some nice memory numbers.
 
Everything seems stable @ 3.9Ghz, and I even lowered the vcore down to 1.25 and still seems fine. I tried upping vcore to 1.35 and hitting 450x9 (4Ghz) and while it did actually boot into Windows this time it froze shortly after, so looks like I'm most likely stuck @ 3.9Ghz which is fine by me but 4Ghz would have just been better sounding. My temps seems to stay around 44-48C idle and ~60C load. I gamed alot on it last night (Crysis, Left 4 Dead, Fear Combat, Fear 2 demo, Doom 3, Spore, Bioshock) and ran 3DMark Vantage a couple times and no crashes so without running any stress test proggies I'd say it appears stable for everyday use. This CPU ownz!
 
If your stable at 3.9ghz with 1.25, and you cant get to 4.05 with 1.35, it seems like you might be FSB limited. Im in the same boat...my Q9650 does 467x9 = 4.2 at 1.25v...cant do 500x8 no matter what though.
 
Mine needed the volts bumped quite a bit and skews messed with from what it takes at 4ghz to get to 4.5ghz (4ghz was 1.2vcore, 1.3vNB, stock on most everything else while 4.5 took hours to zero in on the settings that work)
 
Everything starts as a multiple of 33 , so it is best to OC by as multiples of 33 and not some wierd FSB like 411 or 425.

If you're fine with 433, you could try 466 , up Vcore to 1.35 , up FSB voltage by 0.05/0.1V and NB voltage by 0.05/0.1V. Your temps are probably starting to limit you , try with open case.

Hrm, you really think I could hit 4.2Ghz? That'd own! I know what's safe on the vCore but I don't know anything about the fsb termination, ICH, or NB voltages...what are the defaults on those and what should be considered safe to run daily?
 
4.2 is doable...mine is doing 467x9 @ 1.35V, whereas nissan requires only 1.25 so I'd say it's doable.

As for voltages..I think I set both south bridge voltages + .05 from stock, northbridge is at 1.45V (just for safety since I'm running 8gb of 1066 ram), FSB Vtt should be never be more than 1.4V. I also set the GTL voltages, but how/what you set depends on your board and how it deal with it. My iP35 Pro had menu options than my maximus ii formula.. but just google it and you'll find examples.

Once I had the GTL settings down, I could lower my vcore a little.
 
Tried 4.2 and just got a black screen, tried 4 again and still froze in Windows even with upped voltages. Also @ 3.9Ghz which I thought was stable I was playing Mirror's Edge and about an hour in I got a BSOD saying something about the processor so I stepped it down to 3.8 and so far so good. Really I'd be happy with 3.6 and I was estatic to see it go over that, so 3.8 is good.
 
I'd take a closer look at your power supply (620 watts) as driving an overclocked quad 9650, an overclocked GTX280, and several hard drives is cutting it very fine IMO, i would go for 750 watts

Seriously doubt that as I've got an APC and it shows my PC only pulling somewhere around 380W peak so still have room. Plus this PSU has 50A on the rail, this is plenty of power for what I got. I fixed my Scythe Infinity h/s last night, stole the pegs off the stock h/s and put it on and now I'm down to 30C idle and 52C load @ 3.8Ghz and vCore @ 1.25v. I should probably now try for 4Ghz again and up my volts maybe to 1.4. I'm still a bit unsure what I'm doing on the voltage for the nb, sb, and fsb though so maybe I need to do something there, or with my memory. I dunno though, 3.8Ghz is a happy place it seems so maybe I'll just leave it there.

I'm in the process now (literally) of overclocking a QX9650 (yours is a non-extreme right?. Well, I have got to 4ghz (the sweet spot(!), But can't seem to pass prime 95 on all cores, the first one "stops" after 20-30 mins, but PC doesn't crash.

I have run Crysis benchmark, 3Dmark 2006/Vantage,(all one after the other) and all therse run perfectly, with no BSOD, or an hint of it.

I have a Striker II formula Motherboard (ASUS), and I set my CPU volts to 1.43 in BIOS, as when i reboot, and start up "CPUZ", and "speedfan" the Volts read as 1.36 max - dropping to 1.34. Hope these are real voltage readings, as wouldn't want to be running my CPU at 1.43 volts (not unknowingly anyway).

I don't touch the other volts, as I'm new to overclocking, and not sure what settings to do, so i leave them alone.

Well, if your pc doesn't crash then i guess the PSU is fine:)

My settings for 4Ghz are 10.5 multi/381 fsb BTW
