So...I have a Q6600 B3 right now, OCed to 2.8 GHz for the moment...I have a friend who is looking to build a cheap system, and thus may want my used parts (I have an old 680i around, an old 8800 GTS G92...) and I'm considering grabbing a Q9550 45nm CPU...it'd give me a little better CPU with a larger cache...but is it worth it? Will I see any substantial heat reduction over my B3, and any substantial perf increase in games?

Right now, you aren't really getting the most from your CPU. If you were to overclock it to ~3.2GHz, you would remove most of any CPU bottleneck that you may currently have. Past around 3.2GHz, the CPU isn't really the limiting factor. So no, you probably wouldn't notice a substantial performance improvement in games if you went to a decently overclocked Q9550. However, it still is a faster CPU, and in many other general-purpose tasks it will be faster and more responsive.
 
But it also comes at a premium. You're not gonna notice a few fps difference between an overclocked q66 and q55. Same goes for the e84. Quad vs Duo has been beaten to death already; both perform on par in games (and plz don't say "but, quads are better at 640*480").
