Q9550 Temp issue

I recently upgraded from a Q6600 to a Q9550 and the temperature I am seeing seems to be way off in the BIOS/PC Probe. I am using a Zalman 9700, an Antec 900 case, and the motherboard is an Asus Formula Rampage. I was wondering what program is the best to monitor temperatures of the cores? Right now the individual CPU temp is stating 12 degrees C... And I know that probably isn't even close.

I have found information on this, but I have also seen many people going back and fourth. Any help is much appreciated and thanks in advance. Please note the processor is at stock speeds currently. I also realize that from the Q6600 to the Q9550 is not that big of an upgrade but it was a good price and I am using the old processor in a server.

I hope this is the right place to ask this question. I have also updated the BIOS on the motherboard.

Have you tried Core Temp or Real Temp? 12C is REALLY cold, and would have to be really cold in your room for it to be around that, keep in mind 12C is only 53F, meaning your room would have to be colder than 53F.

I have 3 progs I use for temps, Everest, Core Temp and Real Temp. Out of the three Core Temp always shows the highest readings, Everest is about 1C lower and Real Temp reads about 5C lower.
 
+1 for using Real Temp. Be sure to get the latest version that BFI linked above.

If Real Temp also shows abnormally low temps, then click on the "Test Sensors" button to see if it finds a stuck sensor in your CPU.

Thanks guys yeah that was my point... 12C (right now its 18C still way low) seems impossible.

Okay right now with Core Temp I am showing: 27 27 30 32

On Real Temp I am showing: 21 21 25 27

These are idle temps and I have the 9700 turned down to like 1700 RPM.

Do these temps look okay?
 
Depending on the temp in your room (and if you are OCing) they seem about right, I am OCed to 3.8GHz and get 31-31-31-33 in Real Temp and 36-36-36-38 in Core Temp.
 
My temperature in my house is about 21 C or 70 F. One other question on these procs what is the dangerous thermal point? I mean when doing a burn-in etc and OC'ing how high should the temps be allowed to get?

Well seeing as your room is 21C I would be more inclined to lean more to the Core Temp readings, the Q9550 has a TJ max of 100C. And thanks for asking that question, it made me just realize something, Real Temp lists the TJ max as 95C which is why the temps were off by 5C, I don't know why I didn't see that before, you see each program measures the temp as a percentage of the TJ max. TJ max is the temp you NEVER want to go over, and everyone has their own ideas of what a "safe" temp is from TJ max, some say 20C other think only 10C is enough. I my self lean to the cautious side of things always, I don't like seeing mine even go over 75C, these are all load temps by the way!
 
Awesome thanks for the information. One more question, what is a really good program to stress the processor? Yeah I agree with you about the 75 being the max.
 
Awesome thanks guys. I think I will run this processor stock for a bit and then try to push it.

One other question, if a core does appear to be stuck on the temperature or not changing like the others is there any way to fix it?
 
Is it okay if the temp is like that? On Core # 2 it appears to be off by about 5 degrees from the other cores.
 
Sounds good thanks again for all of the help on this. One last thing on the old Q6600 is 75C a good thermal max to follow? I am using the IntelBurn Test on my other system (server) and temps are getting to 70 right now...
 
The TJ max on the Q6600 is also 100C, if you are OCing 70C is not to bad of a temp.
 
Yeah no overclocking on the Q6600, because I put the processor in a Dell SC440. Idle it runs at about 30C and on burn-in it's about 74C max so far. I am obviously not going to be stressing the system like that all the time, but I might see about modding the cooling... technically the Q6600 is outside of spec on these systems, but everyone I have spoke with on here claims they work great with the system.

It's stock on the Q6600, and on the Q9550 it is the Zalman 9700 but I have the fan turned down low. I know if I OC I will need to turn the fan way up.

The case on the Dell SC440 is pretty clean looking but I really think some extra fans could be installed etc.
 
Well 74 seems bit high for a stock clock, however it is the stock cooling and I don't know where that should be at, however the temps are nothing to be worried about, I just think they could be better.

My max temps on my Q9550 are 60C on my hottest core after 25 passes with IBT.
 
Yeah after 5 passes of using 5GB of ram I am at about 72-74 C running both Real Temp and Core Temp (taking the higher temp of the 2). This is the stock cooler that came with the Dell, so it is somewhat different than the stock cooler from Intel. I might see if I can mod it some how, maybe even see if I can try to get the fan to work more. It seems to only run on high speed when the system first turns on.

For the most part the server (Q6600) is only going to be a file server and maybe to host a few online games (L4D etc.) nothing too big, but if I plan on running the system at 100% on some things I definately don't want to be too close to the 70's etc.

Well being that its a server I doubt it will EVER be pushed as much as IBT will. However stock coolers will tend to sacrifice temps for less noise. Depending on the mobo you might be able to turn it off in the bios or set the fan speed higher.
