Which CPU would be good for gaming and everything else?

Is it worth the extra $259 and go with the 9550 or not?

go for q9450 , thats better than . just as u cannot justify extra 200$ for q6700 over q6600 , same situation here . q9550 has a higher multiplier , if u want to overclock it further than q9450 , then go for it.

All that extra money for half a multiplier difference? Terribly inefficient and won't buy you that much speed. Not to mention that both of them will easily reach the 3.0GHz mark, beyond which you see zero improvement in most games at high res.
 
The Q9550 is an enthusiast CPU made only for those who wish to achieve 4.0GHz such as myself, hence the half-step 8.5x multiplier from the Q9450. Since the maximum FSB frequency achievable on most motherboards with these chips is ~470MHz, a Q9450 would give only a theoretical ~3.76GHz speed, whereas the Q9550, given an 8.5x multiplier, would yield ~4GHz frequencies.
 
$200+ for .5 multi? God I would love to be intel right now.

When they bring the Q9650 (x9) on Q3 2008, they are going to slash the prices of the Q9450 and Q9550. Guarantee you. But by then more word of nehalem will come out...
 
I can do 3.72Ghz on my X3350... I don't need 280Mhz for an e-penis... that's plenty for almost anything most people do. Not worth the extra $200.
 
will an asus pb5 deluxe support these processors? are the a good board overall? Thanks

Amen.

What really seems ironic to me, is that these people trying to top 4.0GHz are primarily gamers. Guess what? Anything above a Core 2 @ 2.5GHz does virtually nothing for increasing framerates in games at 1920x1200.

If they did a lot of encoding, and all those other things that are raw number crunching that speed up linearly with clockspeed, then I could understand it. But these people are spending hundreds of dollars for one thing:

A bigger 3DMark06 CPU score.

Yes it will. I've got a P5B-E and it says the 9450 is supported. Though you might be limited to about a 430Mhz FSB due to the 965 chipset, limiting the OC to 3.4Ghz or so.
