Q9550 65W?

Many ppl have been talking about the E0, so unannounced isn't how I'd phrase it. It is most likely one in the same.
 
I know about the E0. The point of interest here is the 65W designation. If you take a look at the page, there is also a 95W E0
 
65W would be nice.

Worth looking into.

The E8200-E8600 duals have a 65W TDP, while most Intel quads are 95W TDP, a 65W TDP quad just sounds a lil far fetched @ this moment in time. I think it would take quite a bit to get a 45nm quadcore to a TDP of 65W, something like 2.2-2.5ghz and less than 8MB cache. :confused:
 
nah, is all about the voltage. If they can cherry pick the ones that run with less default voltage, and they set the VID down to 1.10v +- it should be around 65W.

Remember e8200-e8600 area all just grouped together in the under 65W envelope, most especially the lower models run significantly under 65W. The e8600 @ 3.33Ghz is under 65W, and they probably still have room to release an e8700 and maybe even an e8800 under the 65W envelope.

So a quad at like 2.8+-Ghz with low voltage should be able to get under 65W easily.
 
Look at the way Xeon's work. There are multiple TDP versions of the quad cores at the same speed grade. For example, you can buy a 120W 3.0GHz Harpertown (SLASA) or get an 80W version of the same thing for a bit more money (SLANR).
 
Yeah, Intel already has a 2.66GHz 50W quad core Xeon (L5430) and a 2.53GHz 45W quad core laptop processor (QX9300).

It's not outside possibility that Intel could make a 65W 2.83GHz quad core for the desktop if it chose to.

Depends on the price, but it would probably be a very good overclocker. With the new i7 CPUs though, it's probably not a great value.

At idle, I'm at 22c and the cores are 35, 35, 31, 41. At 100% load for for 1 min, processor went to 28c, cores are 41, 35, 39, 41.

I do have screens.

There's a thread on here about them. q9550s it's called, and there are other "s" versions, q8200s etc. Out around Jan 18.

Exactly, these "s" models are going to have to be very competitively prices compared to the 920 i7's. Sure its a different mobo/ram platform but if the 9550s ends up costing $50-100 more than the 920 that's going to limit its accessibility. Then again maybe that's part of the plan. Make Schmoe's like myself who just got an E7200/P45/ddr2 set up pay a premium for sticking with S775

Yeah that's what I mean. $50 more than the current 9550. So basically a 9550s and a decent mobo will be very close in price to a i7 920 and a decent x58, especially if those prices come down a bit more as expected. Shoot even ddr3 is bound to be quite a bit less by January as compared with now.
A Q9550s platform is still going to be a bit cheaper but its not going to be a slam dunk decision over a i7 920 system
 
These are made for those who will save much more than $50 / CPU in power costs over time, but need the performance offered by current 95W TDP quads.
 
I'd want to see actual power consumption compared, but I think the delta will be less than 30W under heavy load for the Q9550 vs Q9550s.

Even if it used 30W less and you ran it under a heavy load all the time, it would take you over 15000 hours (almost 21 months) to get back the price difference at $0.11/KW-H (what I pay including city tax). In a datacenter, assuming these are going into 1S servers, that might make sense since the savings may include cooling and the life span will be in years. For most typical home users, even heavy ones, the main reason won't be to save money. ;) The smaller form factors could be a benefit. I have slim cases that will happily run 65W and 45W processors, but overheat when 95W processors are installed.

In the case of servers we can easily imagine hundreds in one location, so it adds up fast. Otherwise the 30w are insignificant, unless as you mentioned, one needs monster power in a small form factor.

Yes, but this is a desktop chip, not a server chip. Intel already makes low-power server CPUs.
