I'm in a dilema at the moment. My motherboard died on my Q9450 that was running at 3.6GHZ. Its the motherboard as I tested the memory and cpu on my friends computer. The real question is should I go ahead and find another motherboard for the Q9450 or should I upgrade. Is it worth the upgrade for a system that is running a HD6970? Upgrade would cost me more than replacing the board but in the long, is it worth it or should I hold out for the new Sandy chips.

Thats the thing. I have a motherboard with the X48 north bridge, and I can't seem to find any motherboard with that chipset. I can find the P45 easily for little over 100. Will I lose any performace going with a P45 instead of the X48? I'm not crossfiring any time soon or in the future. Most likely will upgrade in about 6-8 months. Looks like they are EOL by now. I've been out of the CPU upgrade for over a year. Sorry to be a bother about this.

i dont think youll lose any noticeable performance at all. And P45 loves to OC the Q series chips.

If you can get yourself a nice used P45 like say a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P (pretty much THE board of choice for OC'ing the Q9450/9550) for around $50 then go for it. There isn't going to be a performance loss from swapping down from X48, it's advantage was the 2x 16x lanes which you will not be making use of.

If you need to spend $100+ for a S775 at this point, you're really better off just getting a new CPU and RAM as well and doing a full upgrade. In this case if you aren't in a rush, wait for Sandybridge as it's right around the corner. If you can't wait grab a I7 920 and call it a day.

I'm in a rush. Jumping onto the P45 and hold off for full upgrade when sandy comes out. Thanks everyone.
