Which one is the best bang for the buck? THANKS!

I can afford either, but my money is hard earned as much of yours is, so I just want to know it's going to be used most efficiently.

I can't comment on comparrisons between the 2 as I don't know. I only own the X3350 and havent gotten around to installing it yet. That said if you want bang for buck don't overlook the Q6600 either. For it's price it's very competitive.

im curious to know why you would consider the xeon (X3350) to the desktop (q9450). There must be some difference in performance or something since one is meant to be a server chip and the other a desktop?

I'm just asking for curiosity sake...i've never thought of getting a xeon as i always thought they were too expensive but I was wrong about that...

When it comes to Xeons and Core2Duos (for LGA775 that is) there is no difference in the chips. Only the microcoding that identifies them. There's lots of speculation that the Xeons go through more validation testing, but only an insider at Intel can confirm that. There's, lots of real evidence that the Xeon equivalents when benchmarked offer the same exact scores as their Core2Duo counterparts, when on the same testing platform of course.

So the short answer: same chip, different branding, different target market.

As the poster on the bottom stated, the Xeon's are identical in every way to the Q9450's.

It makes me feel even better to place my money there because I know the Xeons serve the Server market and I would assume that if anything, they've went through more rigorous testing!

Xeons are not only server chips, they are suitable for workstation use as well. Xeons and Opterons used to mean buffered memory and greater validation, although the sockets of the chips were different the cores were pretty much the same. They were typically recommended for mission critical apps and situations where the systems stability was key. I think that since the Opteron 144 became popular, that Intel and AMD started making Xeons and Opterons that work in standard desktop sockets. The whole reason we now have server/workstation parts available for our desktop boards, is purely marketing and sales strategy. About 2 years ago AMD was trying to gain market share in the server/workstation market, and they simply put out these parts to reflect better sales in these markets.

It's really funny now, that with Skulltrail, you've got an enthusiast part that's essentially a tweakable server board.

Yeah, just pulled the trigger on the E8400.

I figured I'd save $130 and I'll just put that into a Q9450 later and I'll resell the E8400 for $150ish!!

Well back when I was using AMD, I can tell you from experience that the opteron's ran cooler, and overclocked better then their desktop counter parts, but this is the socket 939 series. I dunno how the server intel chips are, but I'm anxious to see.
