if i want to OC the Q9450 from 2.66GHz (8x333) to 3.0GHz (8x375 or 7.5x400) which of the setting would be better? i will be using DDR2-800 RAMs... would a 1:1 RAM to DRAM better or the higher multiplier would be better?
 
Lower FSB will be less stressful to your NB, performance-wise they do not have a difference. YOu are looking at 1:1 ratios for most if not all C2 overclocks.
 
hmm i guess i will try both setting to see what difference will it make to the NB then?
and what do u mean by C2 overclocks?
 
so most ppl with a Core 2 family CPU go for 1:1 ratio overclock?
and i should go with the 7.5x400???
i m just hoping the difference in heat that each setting wouldnt be a big difference...
 
There is nothing wrong with running you RAM asynchronous, BUT even though you have a 375 FSB you can still run the RAM synchronous, you just lower the RAM in the bios to a 1:1 ratio. You will just be underclocking your RAM.
 
is underclocking the RAM a bad idea then?
but the BIOS only have 667 800 1066 DDR setting IIRC...

NO, underclocking the RAM is just fine. There are only those options because you are running a 333FSB so your lowest setting 667 (1:1 ratio) is underclocking your RAM. when you OC to 375 667 will no longer be an option, so change your FSB first and then look to see what your choices for RAM is. Should be 750 something. To find out what 1:1 is you just take your FSB and multiply it by 2, because your RAM speed is double pumped, so 667 divided by 2 = 333.

Yes and no, how far you can go with timing is up to your RAM, and you will only be able to find out by messing around with them and testing for stability.

Well, I have yet to see a database for Q9550's so I don't know how "good" my OC is. I got the 1.20V by messing around with the OC for about 2 days, there are allot more settings than just vcore, FSB and RAM settings. I would have to get a cap of my bios, as I don't remember most of the voltages I have lol. FSB Termination was the one that had the biggest impact on stability I think it's at 1.26V, NB is 1.26V also, my RAM is what is holding me back, at 2.0V and REALLY bad timings, it could do much better if I just ran 2 sticks though.
