Q9300 over E8400? Upgrade?

I know this has been asked a million times and I've seen enough threads about this, but I still want to ask, should I upgrade my E8400 @ 3.8ghz with a Q9300? I just received a Q9300 as a gift today, very tempting to try. I don't play a whole lot of games btw.

what's a good decent overclock should I shoot for for Q9300. I have Asus P5Q Pro
 
And you thought your thread would generate different answers than the threads you've already read because???
 
All the threads I've seen are back in Febuary and March, so I'm thinking things could be changed by now? o
 
I can't comment on the E8400, but I just built a system with the Q9300 (upgraded from an E6750) and I've been very happy with it. I don't game much, however, that's not to say I won't every now and again. I like being able to multi-task better.

I have an Asus P5Q-E and currently OC'd at 3Ghz @ 1.03v and stable. I haven't tried to go any higher, but it looks very promising. It won't OC as well as the E8400, but I prefer the extra cores to be honest.

My only real complaint about the chip is that the cache is a little on the low side, however, I probably wouldn't tell the difference unless I had to comparable systems side-by-side.
 
It depends on what programs you use. If you are a gamer, then you're probably better off with the high-clocked dual core. If you truly multitask (run virus scan while burning dvd's and gaming, etc) then stick with the quad. If you convert a lot of video or audio, then the quad will be much faster if your program can take advantage of it.
 
Q6600, and overclock it to about 3.3 or 3.4! :D

The Q6600's overclock like crazy.

I personally have one at 3.3 and another at 3.1.... both with stock cooler, and VERY little extra voltage, on an Asus P5Q Pro....

You received it as a gift huh? Yes absolutely try it out. Test it and see. Anything resembling a decent OC should see you over 3.5Ghz. If that's the case then overall you have a winner. Turn around and sell your E8400 on the FS forum for $125 and everyone's a winner

Are you serious? On a Q9300 a 3.5+ resembles a "decent" overclock? The multiplier is 7.5...a 3.5+ is damn near record-breaking. I would say a 3.2 is a decent OC.
