For some reason my 6660 wont boot at 9x1400 to give me 3.2ghz, it boots at a ridiculous 9x1600, and looks like it would be stable, except that idle temps are beyond unacceptable for me, my rig is in my sig, anyone have any similar issues

while, im at it I'll go ahead an ask, I havent lapped the hs or cpu yet ( mainly cause I didnt know what it was until I lurked a little harder ) but im ilding at 44c @ 1.3v, before I switched cases I was idling at 52c, so theres quite a bit of difference there, but I was wondering would lapping drop my temps even lower, or do I not have adequate enough cooling?

Lapping might get your temps down a tiny but, however its usually not going to get you a much better overclock. What are your load temps with all 4 cores @ 100% on Prime95 Small FFTs? What software are you checking temps with?

ROFL, OVER NINE THOUSAND! :D full load on prime it varies, my hottest average temp is 65c but im a little uncomfortable with that temp because I'd like to hit 3.2 if possible

What did you use for a TIM between the core and the CPU cooler?

I like aesthetics..........

Well since you are having an apparent functionality issue, I am just saying its not the best idea to replace one cooler with another one just because the new one is pretty :p There is a small number of truly exceptional CPU coolers on the market, and that Asus may not be in the same league as the Tuniq Tower, TRUE120, Xigma 1283...

yeah, but the way I look at it is it cant get a track record until enough people buy it, if it sucks I can always replace it but anywho somehow this has turned more into cooling than my real problem, I cant post at 9x400 fsb, im not sure what that relates to because since its quad pumped im at 1333 right now an that gives me 3.0, like I stated earlier though I can get all the way into windows at 9x1600 ( 3.6 ) but not at 9x1400.....whenever I change my fsb to 1600 and exit an save bios it write an new rom sip table to the cmos, what exactly is that doing? is my problem something having to do with that?

screw that, I used to have a thermaltake big water an it was a pain in the ass, the documentation didnt say anything about using different coolant because the coolant that came with it would corrode the leads, so eventually, I had a rusted water block, radiator, no water flow, tons of metal in my reservoir and it never was really as cool as I thought it would be

So work some magic and do 8x400... That would jump the FSB hole, then you can worry about your temps. This really is not that complicated

8x400 doesnt relate to 3.2 its something else, im not sure how asus designed theyre bus architecture but its confusing as hell, whenever I wanted to go from 2.4, which was 1066x9, I increased the fsb 240 mhz to get 1333, and that somehow translated into 600 mhz core clock increase ( im not TOO familiar with overclocking, but ive read enough guides to know enough about what im doing not to destroy my parts ) so if I do what you guys are suggesting, I'll end up with some weird underclocked speed...........it think ;)

Divide by four.
1333 divided by four is "333". 9x333 is 3 GHz.

1600 divided by four is "400". 9x400 is 3.6 GHz, 8x400 is 3.2 GHz.

What you're looking for is "1600x8".

I wouldn't blame ASUS as much as I would blame the 680i's idiotic bios.

yeah im not really blaming asus cause this board kicks ass, but its so weird to have a "relative" fsb instead of displaying actual, anywho, thanks, I'll try those settings an post what happens

i agree with the last few posts. 8x1600 or 8x400 whatever nomenclature used. i cant imagine that 3.6ghz over 3.2ghz is going to give you anything more than a few % difference in real life. i know the e-penis factor is exponential over real world advantage but to each his own...

well its not stable at 9x1600, I get multiple errors in prime, an under stress it peaks at 75c which I dont like at all, also trying 8x1600 doesnt get past post, even at full voltage:confused:

set your ram to stock settings...which i'm assuming is 800mhz. that will give you a 1:1 ratio anyway.

Your load temps are way too high.

Try a tuniq tower, much cheaper and works really good.

One important thing to check is how much thermal paste are you applying? Just a thin layer is needed, I like to use a razor blade to apply a thin coating to the base of the heatsink.

What is the ambient room air temp? Do you have ample air flow in your case? You are using air cooling and if your case flow sucks then your just cooling your cpu with hot air.

yeah Ive got more than ample air flow ( cooler master cosmos S  ) I'll try reapplying the thermal paste and seeing what that does for me, gimme about 10-15 an I'll repost results

i would try just a large rice grain sized smudge in the middle. of the heatsink. let the pressure of the contact fill in the gaps.

I think the thermal paste I have is old or something, instead of spreading its like a rubber that just sorta smears residue on the die.........thats gotta be the problem:D

That is normal for some paste. What type if TIM do you have exactly?

grab yourself some MX-2....lapping the processor is never a bad idea, considering if the IHS is not making good contact, then that in turn is not going to allow the HSF to cool the core properly, lapping can drop it from anywhere between 1 degree and 15 degrees again depending on how bad the IHS contact is, once its lapped put a like a dab (like the size of a piece of rice) of MX-2 right in the center of the cpu, remount your HSF, and run it at 356x9@stock volts, also check for a Vdroop in CPUZ as well if there is you are going to want to bump the volts one notch at a time until you get it stable....also check the VID as well, the lower the better it should overclock

NUFF SAID

awesome! I'll give it a try just as soon as I get a video card :) an post how it goes, also since Im trying out the new asus amazing 79 I'll post quality of cooler with pics and performance if it hasnt already been done by then.

Given that you could not get your current configuration figured out and working correctly, throwing $80 on a different cooler is not likely going to be you much further for you to produce good data for comparison. But good luck :D

its not the fact that I couldnt get it figured out, or working correctly, cause I have it stably overclocked as it is, its just getting it that little extra that I couldnt figure out, so yeah I do think that adding an 80 cooler might make a difference over one that has a really dirty fan, comes with better thermal paste, and doesnt have a crimped heat pipe :p
