I know I am a n00b for even buying this after reading this forum. This is my first shot at trying OCing. I have a Asus striker II Formula mboard with a q6660. The box has 3 fans and is very cool.

Well since any heavy overclocking is out fo the question I was thinking to maybe try and get it to 3.0. Do you guys think this is a bad idea? Also I only spent 169 on it so I am not that sad about it. I really want something internal too without tubes coming out of my box. Yea I know that doesn't work well. Anyone got any suggestions for something under $300?

Hmm, it should be alright under idle, and acceptable under load.

Just try it, and get back to us :)

Return it if you can and just get a Xigmatech S1283 and a Thermalright Bolt-Thru kit for ~$35 and ~$5 respectively. Call it $50 with shipping. You'll probably get better performance under load than the $170 Freezone, though the idle temps (which don't really matter) will almost certainly be higher.

Where is your sense of adventure! Presuming you can not return it, put that sucker to use and let us know the results :D

Well after hours and hours of reading forums and suggestions I learned three very easy things I can do to improve performance of the freezone. One get rid of the factory thermal paste and use Artic Silver 5. Two change the 96mm fan to a 120mm and three make sure the mobo has 100% power to the cpu fan. This will also quiet the factory fan which sounds like a 747 taking off from what I hear. My friend also has a heat sink thingy that makes sure the heat sink sits perfectly flat on the chip which should help make sure I got a perfect installation on my CPU.

Need more explaination on this one...

Yes it can handle the load. However you don't have to pay 300 dollars for one. You can find plenty on fleabay, and I even have one that's nib.

3.0 on a Q6600?

Just do it. Even the stock cooler is plenty for that speed.

Its almost impossible to break a cpu via overclocking as long as you dont increase the voltage too much. If you oc too much it will simply not work and you have to reset the BIOS.

I think over 90% of Q6600's can hit 3.0 on stock vcore. Its a very easy overclock because its just a standard bump from 200 to 333 fsb.
