Q6600 trade for e2180

Hey. Some guy on [H] is offering to trade his Q6600 with IHS removed from my 1 month old e2180 + some cash.

Would I just be better off waiting for the Q6600 (Brand new) prices to drop?

Is the life really cut down on this chip since the IHS was removed?

How can I tell how old this chip is?
 
ermm i'm not sure. He just said:

"I have a de-lidded (IHS is removed) Q6600 I'd trade for your E2180 + cash. Tried sending you an IM, let me know if you're interested."

He wants my e2180 + $130 but that's way to high since my CPU is new and it's $70 retail.

Also, I thought removing the IHS is called Lapping?
 
well id also have to take the amount of cash added, but I wouldnt do it. a brand new q6600 is only like 180? and a oc'd e2180 runs close to a stock q6600. unless ur desperate for a quad :/

Nope "de-lidding" is called "de-lidding", removing the cpu heat spreader (IHS) from the cpu itself. (very difficult sometimes) :)
"lapping" is called "lapping", patiently sanding your cpu heat spreader (IHS) to be as flat as possible (convex, concave, etc) Some people go to the extreme of polishing their IHS's to a shine. Personally I go as far as 800 grit wet/dry sand paper and call it quits. :D

 
I don't know he delidded it. I popped the top on my broken e8400 and it seemed as if the core was soldered to the heat spreader. Upon removing it, the core shirred in half.
 
Yeah I turned it down. He was asking $130 + my e2180.

I didn't need it now anyway but I was going to be playing some newer games when they came out (left4dead, empire totalwar, ect) and I thought this would give me a bit of a boost.

The difference between the two has been covered already, so I won't get into that. (As for how, it usually involves a big heat source, like a blowtorch or stove.)

If you have to ask, it's not for you. Delidded chips require board modifications to work (because the exposed core is lower than the CPU retention frame), and requires a lot of extra care to make sure the heatsink doesn't crush/chip the core. Again- if you have to ask, assume you don't have the experience for it yet. Not meant to insult your skills, just one of those things where if you have to ask, don't do it.

No I understand, but I believe in the P4 days, the IHS was just glued on the top and a ton of thermal compound was put in between them.

obviously they improved it, but I didnt know. Its not a common practice as much as it was back then.
