Yeah, I'm as dumbfounded as you. We just got a nice 3.6ghz box up and running with complete stability but for some insane reason it idles hotter than under full load in prime95 or any game we can think of. About 59-61c (for core1, other cores run in the early 50s) idle until starting prime95 then drops down to 57 (and the other cores to under 50) and will not go back up more than 1 or 2 degrees. I confirmed it's still running fairly cool by touching the HSF and it's cool to the touch. To me, this says that the CPU is being 100 percented better than prime95, somehow, by windows. Speedstep, C1E, TM1/TM2 all disabled. I enabled them to see if they'd do anything - nope. G0 stepping.
Any ideas?
Setup:
EVGA 780i with P03 bios (FSB 400)
4gb patriot DDR2 1200 (running at 800 in 1:1 with FSB)
Master Cooler Gemini 2 with 2 thermaltake 120mm fans, reseated once after we thought "idle" at over 55 was way too high...
OCZ 600w
Edit: Ok apparently "maximum heat" means something else to the prime95 guys because that test is the one we were running and was cooling us down, switching over to the FPU stress test we got a huge increase in temps (hit 70c) but we have been reading the core temps the entire time, not the overall cpu temp. What's the max safe for the cores?
