Q6600 temps high?

Hello,

Just got a Q6600 (B3 stepping) and my idle temps seem a little high.

on idle im getting 50-56 C on all cores, I ran orthos on the four cores for a while and they went up to 77 C...

Im running everything at stock speeds and im using the stock heatsink/fan.

I do not plan on overclocking yet, im just wondering if the temps are high.

Yeah, those temps are rather high.
Since you're not overclocking at all, it shouldn't cause too much harm.
But it might be a good idea to get a third party HSF for precaution measures.

How's your airflow in your case?
 
Just because you're not overclocking doesn't mean that there is no harm in high temps. 71C is the max the q6600 should get to, those temps are BAD and there is a problem with your mount and/or paste.

I'd do a remount with some arctic silver, and also work on the air flow in your case. My temps don't go over 58c at 3.1 ghz overclock, 1.26 volts; idle is around 40 but or low 40's since I have an extreme overclocked 8800 in the case; but max temps at load are what you need to worry about.
 
my airflow is not that great, ive got a thermaltake tsunami, but its a mid tower, and with a 8800GTS and 3 hard drives, things are pretty crammed up in there.

Ill consider getting a third party HSF.

What I meant was that, he's not going to be on load 24/7. And without any overclocking it shouldn't harm it as much. As I said , "shouldn't cause too much harm" And I also stated that the temps are high and for him to get an aftermarket hsf.

71 is the maximum case temperature at the maximum TDP value for the cpu.
 
Which sensors are we talking about here ? 71c on the cores or on the t-case ? Mine hits 71 on the cores when I prime it but no throttle and no issues. T-case is about 55 max with a q6600 g0/1.45v 3.6ghz

When you say 'Prime it' what are u using there? large/small fft or balanced.

I'm thinking small fft might be irrelevant since the temps get so high, I don't think anything could induce such temps except that. When I run blend or occt my temps don't get anywhere close to with small fft's.
 
I wouldn't lap either one if I got good temps at the OC I wanted. The time it takes to lap a HSF just isn't worth it to me if performance is already good.

also lapping the IHS on the chip is equally important.

Just FYI, this voids the warranty, in case you didn't know. Also, lapping the IHS is only important if it isn't completely flat (its concave or something).
 
UPDATE:

well guys i got worried about my temps so I went ahead and bought a zalman 9700 with some artic silver.

Several things happened, ill be as brief as possible.

I mount my zalman hsf with some artic silver 5, following instructions carefully from both websites (cleaned the cpu, applied a very thing line of AS over the 4 cores of the cpu).

I turn on my computers......and my idle temps were on 80+ C :eek:
I quickly shut down.

I remount, cleaning everything and reapplying AS5, this time I tried to screw in the heatsink harder... I turn on, and temps are just like they used to be...about 50-60 on idle :confused:

Im like, screw it, so I remount again, this time, I dont use AS5, I use the thermal paste included with the zalman and I apply it all over the cpu (just as the website says).

I turn my pc on, now my idle temps are 35-40, and after a while of priming my four coures ive not seen the temps go over 62 C.

I know those arent excellent temps, but they are better than with the stock HSF and the AS5, which im very sure I applied correctly, I even cleaned the cpu with articlean.

So what do you guys think? I do not plan on overclocking...do you think I can live with these temps?

I wish you would have read the other threads with heatsink recommendations for a Q6600. The Zalman isn't that great of a cooler for a Q6600, especially for its price. You could have gotten a much better cooler for the money.

Yeah well when you live in a country where this sort of stuff is hard to find or ridicously expensive (Mexico) you dont have many options...

I DID read the other threads, the zalman 9700 is the best thing I could find.

Ahh, so in that case, you did make the best decision, since that was the only one you could find, hehe.
 
AS5 is old school now. There are much better paste out there.

Arctic Cooling MX-2 is one of them. It does as good, if not a better job with temps, it's non-conductive, doesn't dry out and doesn't have a long setup period before you see the best results.

This statement isn't true. AS5 is still a great choice regardless of it's "age." MX-2 might be as good or slightly better. To my knowledge, there haven't been any head-to-head comparisons with enough data points or done the right number of times and averaged to say MX-2 or anything for that matter is better.

People don't do the right comparisons; there are too many factors that can skew results when applying paste to do it once with AS5 and once with brand X and say that one is better than another.

Strange, AS5 is still great thermal paste, certainly it is much better than the generic Zalman thermal paste. So I'm confused as to why you're getting much lower temps with the Zalman paste. The only thing I can think of is that the AS5 has separated over time. I'd get some new AS5 or MX-2....

Your temps still seem a little off. I'm idling at 30C according to Coretemp (and I'm using the Intel stock cooler) Perhaps you should look at your case ventilation, the Antec P180 has two 120mm extract tri-cool fans near the CPU, my case temps barely get above 35C even with an overclocked 8800GTS.

The Zalman 9700 is an excellent CPU cooler, don't listen to the naysayers!
 
well case ventilation is horrible, no doubt about that....if I open the side panel temps go lower, however, I cant afford a new case right now but its on my list definately.

Right now ive got a thermaltake tsunami dream, and my components barely fit in there, with a 8800gts and 3 harddrives and a non-modular PSU, I think its safe to say that ive got bad ventilation...but theres nothing I can do about that right now. :eek:

We're not saying its not a good cooler... ok we are... but in reality, it isn't that bad. However, what we are saying is that it isn't good enough for its price (in USD). The Ultima90 or Ultra120 would outperform it and cost the same or less!

$60 - Zalman 9700
$55 - Ultra 120 extreme ($4 - yate loon 120mm fan)
$45 - Ultima 90 ($3 - panaflo 92mm fan)

However, since the OP couldn't find the other coolers at his location, the 9700 wasn't a bad choice.
