Q6600 Temperature Question

hi guys thank for reading my post i have a question i overclocked my q6600 g0 to 2.7 ghz and the temps i get on everest ultimate while running small ftt's torture test on prime 95 are:

cpu: 58 c
core1/2/3/4: 65/65/60/60 celsius
cpu fan: 1688 rpm ( working at 100 % all the time )
cpu core: 1.18 volts
bus speed: 300 mhz
rated fsb: 1,200 mhz

now when im playing new games like call of duty 4 at the same cpu clock speed my temps never go above 50 c on any of my 4 cores, or with any other game.....when im encoding mp3's, or backing up bluray movies is the same thing...so basically i think that no game or anything that i could do on my pc ( except prime 95 ) is gonna stress the 4 cores at a
100 % all the time......am i right ? if i only use my computer for gaming, watch movies, mp3's and back up dvd's, as long as my temps dont get to close to 70 c, i should be fine right ? and by the way what do you guys think of my temps ? is everest ultimate a good monitor program ? thanks for all your help .
 
You do not even need to worry about that CPU until coretemps (everest uses the same method) are over 80C and even then it is not until somewhere around 100C that the CPU will send out an "I am HOT !! - Spin up the fans!" signal. Several, its undocumented, deg C above even that the CPU will just go into thermal shutdown to save itself. So, no, you have nothing to worry about, its not even breaking a hard sweat yet.

Orthos and games stress/work the CPU in different ways. As far as temps go your premise is fairly accurate. However it is easy to tweak a machine "close to the edge" and have it pass Prime or some other computational program that works the core hard for hours and hours with no failure and have a game freeze crash the machine in minutes.

One thing to consider is that Orthos etc do not stress the graphics, all that graphics data running back and forth from the CPU to the graphics cards goes through the MCH/Northbridge which in addition to other things manages the PCI-e port the graphics card(s) use. So with a game the MCH/northbrige gets stressed and might bring the system down when running Orthos/prime it is not stressed.

Everest is good. your temps are good, you will probably not have any issues but keep in mind the computer is not just the CPU, the other sub-systems; CPU voltage regulator, chipset, memory, video are major factors in stability and all deserve the same attention as the CPU to cooling if you do anything more than a medium OC.

Thats good news for me. I am also going to be purchasing the Q6600 G0 soon. I plan to do some over clocking also, what would you recommend as the highest safe temperature for the cores? would you say 80C? or less. I have been running AMD for about 5 years and i am afraid to go over 65C with them, is this not the case for intel CPU's?
 
I think the 80C is a very reasonable value. Documentaion and specs is one thing and accordingly in theory you should be able to run at 99C (or better stated, 1 deg delta to Tjunction per the MSR data reported by the embedded Digital Temp Sensor system) forever. I am not enough of an expert in semiconductor aging or failure analysis to know what the effect of a fairly high operating temp AND a higher than spec Vcore would do to life and reliability. So everything in moderation. 80C ish under load seems a fair amount of thermal headroom and I would think allow for increased Vcore without stressing transistor junctions. We have about 16 months of experience that indicates that 60-80C and Vcore of 1.5V or less do not seem to cause an issue.
 
you probably won't break 80C under load. Besides these core 2's are little bad asses. I don't think at even 95C would hurt unless its sustained for days straight which i doubt.
