Would it be ok to stress test a quad core by only testing 2 cores at a time

the ambient temperature is really high in the UK at the moment and when i do prime small ffts on all 4 cores (3.6 @ 1.4) the temps can reach up to 77c on real temp with an open case using a TRUE

so i was thinking of only running prime on cores 0,2 overnight then 1,3

think that's ok or should i only do all 4 cores or nothing

Testing two cores at a time would defeat the entire purpose of stress testing. You *want* to stress test in the worst possible environment to ensure you PC is stable. A lot of times when you test in a perfect cooled room, when it gets hot months later then your PC starts crashing and you are scratching your head.

Get in your stress testing now while its hot as hell over there, and when things cool down, you will have the utmost confidence that your PC is ok. And when you get another heatwave later on, your PC will be OK then too.
 
im going to lap my cpu and HS tonight then try all 4 cores again

the system never crashed when it reached 77c all im worried about is degrading the cpu think i got a good chip

does 3.6 @ 1.37-1.4 (still testing) and boots into windows at 4.05 @ 1.49 reckon i can get it stable at 1.51 or so if i can control the temps
 
lapped the cpu and HS last night and the max temp is 66c small FFTs on all 4 :D

been running prime for 10+ hours
 
wow, nice drop. Makes me think I should do the same. What grit level did you use to lap it?
 
i did it up to 1200 grit started at 200,600,800,1000 (200 was the hardest and longest)

i have 1500 & 2000 grit here so i could get a mirror finish if i wanted to but got so tired after lapping as it took a total of around 3.5 hours for cpu & 2.5 hours for the TRUE
and Ive also heard getting a mirror finish will likely to degrade performance but need to research more into that
might take it apart and continue up to 1500 later on this weekend tho
